I was wondering if anybody has any out of the ordinary targets they like to shoot. I am looking for something to shoot with a pistol or 22 rifle. Does anybody know how to make any exploding targets that are safe and sane. or has any ideas of other fun things to shoot.
Thanks,
Rusty

As far as exploding targets go, in a couple of competitions I have been to we used bowling pins, but im sure someone else around here has a better idea than this.

Eggs, fruit, and bags of flour explode nicely. The guys who do tannerite have a .22 version, I think. All I can think off of the cuff, anyone else?

Water balloons -- Experiment to find the best balance of air/water for the effect you want. Take a long board with a series of nails in it. Put the board between the uprights from an old target stand, then loop rubber bands or strings over the nails to suspend the balloons.

Flour balloons -- use a turkey baster to blow a little flour into the balloon, then blow the balloon up the rest of the way. Best to use an air compressor to inflate flour balloons because getting the flour in your mouth is just nasty.

Plain old balloons. You can staple small ones by their knotted necks to a regular target stand (we play tic-tac-toe like this). Or get the long & skinny types, or a variety of shapes, and suspend them from a string between a couple of uprights -- they'll blow around a lot, even on a calm day, and provide a real challenge.

Full cans of cheap soda pop.

Any cheap & disposable container that will hold colored water. Milk jugs work well for the kids and have a high "wow" factor because there's so much liquid involved. Or try tiny little dixie cups, old shampoo bottles, just anything that'll hold water.

Rotten fruit and veggies -- ask your grocery store's produce manager for throwaways.

(Edited to add: cleaning up balloons is a pain in the backside, but you have to do it. If you aren't willing to spend way-too-dammuch time picking up the little rubber pieces, don't do balloons.)

I have used 3/4 and 1 inch jaw breakers and other candy, no clean up required. I have also used paint balls, golf balls and clay targets.

cans of aquanet with sparklers taped to em go up nicely. we used to pop off a few of those on 4th of july. tape two sparklers together so you have enough time to get to a safer distance. .22lr works fine but shotguns are cool too.

I've made nice targets out of total useless items from my garage. Grab anything that you might like to destroy from your garage. If your garage is anything like mine, its a goldmine for things to blow up

Among my favorite all time targets include bike helmets, a can of marbles (dont ask) roller skates, tennis rackets, etc. Anything I scrounge around for that I find useless is as good as dead for my Mauser.

A more standard target that you might like is a 2 liter. I have dozens of them, and I like to fill them up with water, or else there is nothing cool about it. Even if you hit the 2 liter from a distance where you can barely see them w/o optics or tools of any kind, you can see the splash nicely.

water balloons, beer cans (unopened), eggs, and quarters are the favored targets in my family.

a case or two of generic beer, a 5 year old, a 22 rifle, a brick of 22's, and 50 yards is hours of entertainment. also, quarters make outstanding souveniers. tape 'em down good, or else they're hard to find. a 22 lr won't pierce one, but bends it up pretty good.

Hey ! Where'd ya get them exploding bowling pins ? :neener: :p

Generic store brand pop is great, explodes nice but the can stays in one piece.

Eggs are great because they are cheap and biodegrabale, same with fruit, as mentioned. I have never tried to get old fruit, but I have on numerous occasions just after holloween bought lots of small pumpkins at dirt cheap prices to shoot up

Thanks for all of the great ideas. I can't wait to go out and try some of these. If I discover or hear of anything new I will post it. Thanks,
Rusty
