do I need a different barrel for different types of shot gun loads? By that I mean going from bird shot to buck shot and on to slugs. not talking about chokes.

Not really....the same barrel should handle all types of shells. Chokes do matter however and not all loads will work equally well through the same choke.

Slugs and full chokes don't do well together. Cylinder bore or skeet or imp cyl seem to be the most accurate smoothbores for slugs. Of course, all chokes do fine for any size shot.

Changing to a CYL or IMP CYL choke tube is all you need to use buckshot and Forster type rifled slugs.

Sabot type slugs require a rifled barrel for best accuracy as they must be spin stabilized like a rifle bullet.
