Just purchased a saiga 308 carbine

I would like to hear any over opinions about this rifle in general

In particular, would scoping it add a real advantage or is scoping an ak style weapon just adding window dressing?

What rails/scopes do people here recomend?

What is the cheapest source for ammo?

thanks

I've had several scopes on mine, and the main advantage was that I could then shoot 3" groups at 200 meters with it. Much better than the iron sights. I have an opportunity to take it hunting in a wooded area soon and I am contemplating just taking it open sights because it is so much lighter and feels good that way. With the irons I got to where I could hit a 8X12 plate and 200 yds regularly from a kneeling position. I have aBP02 mount and medium weaver grand slam rings

I guess in summation my point of view is that scoping it does add utility in turning the 308 saiga (which I have) into a legit hunting rifle by adding your effective range. If you sight one of these in a 250 you do have the accuracy to make the shot using a scope. I am only speaking about the 308 model I don't know about the others. Mine is 1.5 moa to 2 moa depending on the day providing more than enough accuracy to hit a deer at practical ranges. I like the BP02 mount, but there are options including the KVAR unit, several other russian models, a UTG unit that doesn't look too bad as well as a couple scout scope setups. There was a Vepr mount made by MOLOT that was about the best railed mount I saw but they were expensive and I don't see them now. I have seen a very expensive railed forend but never tried it. For ammo I like the federal 150 gr power shok in the blue box at wall mart. It was cheaper than the other stuff by 5-7 dollars a box if I recall and turned in good groups. I tried Hornady 150 gr SST this year and it did not perform well on the deer that I shot. Still trying to figure that one out.

As a friend of mine likes to say: "A scope doesn't help you shoot better, it helps you see better. But then again, you can't hit what you can't see."

The big advantage with scopes is light transmission. In low light a good scope can see better than your eyes. I think the choice of scopes would directly correlate with your intended use of the rifle. The Saiga isn't a long range tack driver, I think a good quality 4X would suffice.

I just bought a pro mag mount for 30$ at a local gun show. It seems pretty solid & allows full use of the iron sights. I put on weaver rings and a tasco 3x9 scope, the set looks good and I will have to wait until I can pick up the gun to actually install it. I also have a bsa red dot I can try on it and it looks like there is plenty of room to rig a flashlight on the side. if I like both setups I might get a 2nd mount.

I can attest to MOA performance with a siderail AK mount from Midway for $30, a CenterPoint 3-9x40 from Dick's/WalMart for $50, and Remington UMC ammo. Also like the Federal PowerShok 150-gr. Pas mal, non?

I can't give you a range report yet, because I just got my Saiga .308, and I'm waiting on the FCG, K-Var stock and pistol grip, etc. for the conversion.

But a 4X Russian PSO 4x24 V-1, is likly the scope that will stay on the rail.
