When the AWB sunsets, do you think there will be hi-cap Saiga mags manufactures? Do you think they just might start to manufacture Saigas that take AK mags and leave the older models alone?

If Saiga chooses not make them, I'm sure someone else will. I think there are enough Saigasout there to make it worth manufacturing them.

The AWB does not forbid the Saiga rifles from accepting >10 round magazines. That law is a result of the 1989 Assault Weapons Import Ban, which states that a rifle needs a certain number of US parts (5, 7, I forget) in order to use "high capacity" magazines.

So even if they made a high capacity magazine for a Saiga, it'd be illegal to use unless the rifle had US parts (less parts if the magazine itself is US made). For the price of getting those US parts, you may as well have a feed ramp installed and convert it to use regular AK mags.

I'd like to see a high capacity converted Saiga that retained the original sporter stock. It'd be...different...

alright....

i replaced the gas piston, along with the fcg, and pistol grip to make it comply... i haven't refinished it yet as you can see...

only bad part about the sporter stock with the PG makes the pull too long, i plan on getting a different stock here soon...

How do you do the conversion? Can I easily get 5 parts U.S. parts in the rifle to comply WITHOUT messing with the stocks?
I don't want to have to move the entire fire group/trigger/whatever forward to accompany a pistol grip...I don't have the technical expertise for an operation like that.

Any links that show how to modify the rifle to accept AK mags would be great.

Why not just buy a VEPR? Figure 180 bucks for the Saiga, at least another 100 in parts, three hours of time and, in my case, the very real possibility of screwing up. It looks cool, but I have neither the time nor the skill to pull that one off.

Izhmash makes them as close as they can: this is what you're getting in the U.S.

Neither will ever accept standard AK mags, due to Russian law: so they'll probably keep making their own. Maybe some mag mfg will take those in their program, maybe not. Making the rifles take AK mags takes a welding stick, a Dremel and all of ten minutes.

The best deal would be to go for a Bulgarian milled-receiver AK...

yesterdaysyouth,

Your Saiga looks great!
I prefer the SAW grip too, it's beefier and more comfortable
for people with large hands.

I have a question on pistol grip placement.
In your opinion would it be possible to place it 3/8" further away
from the trigger? In this case someone with long fingers can have
the first joint of the trigger finger land right on the trigger.

From the conversion link you posted one for starters would
need a receiver without a grip nut hole cut. (7.62x39)
Then one would cut a grip nut hole that's 0.375-0.5" further away
from the trigger hole.

Would this new grip location interfere with anything?

Thanks a lot.
