I am considering getting a Saiga IZ 132R later this summer. I do not want to do a full conversion as I actually like the sporter style configuration. Just add a bullet guide for regular 7.62x39 mags.

That said, the trigger is supposed to be the weak spot of the rifle's redesign. Is there any way to improve it without doing the full conversion to regular pistol grip AK configuration?

If not, I'll learn to live with it but if possible, that would be preferable.

You could possibly do some polishing, but there's not much room in there. It's been a couple years since I restored my Saiga, but I remember the original trigger and transfer bar being held by riveted pins, not just the standard pins of the normal AK. Might make it tough to get the parts out for a trigger job.

If you do decide to leave it in sporter configuration, watch your 922r count if you add the standard size (10+ rd) mags. Not doing the PG conversion leaves you 4 parts over the limit, I believe (sear, trigger, disconnector, and buttstock). You'll probably have to use U.S. made mags for 3 parts, then swap out either the hand guard or the piston to make it compliant.

If I'm wrong on the parts count, I'm sure someone will be by soon to advise.

Like Penguin said, you can't just install the bullet guide and throw in a standard capacity magazine or you will be in violation of 922r compliance law.

If you start making changes that take the rifle out of a sporting configuration, you need to have no more than 10 parts that are of foreign origin. Here's a helpful site for more on that.

So, for instance, you can throw in a Tapco FCG, replace the hand guard and use exclusively domestic mags and you will still have the original configuration with the ability to take standard capacity magazines and be in compliance with 922r law.

There is no really good reason NOT to restore a Saiga back to the proper trigger group configuration.

I had a factory Saiga that had a really nice, crisp trigger...until I converted it. Dang! It was the last one I converted, too. I now wish I had left it alone.

Dinzaq Arms still offers smoothed up trigger parts for the factory config.

Good Luck

I don't know but on the fence about restoring a Saiga. Like OP, I like it the Sporter configuration. The days of the $300 Saiga are behind us and gathering the needed parts to restore one pushes them into Arsenal pricing which seem kind of pointless now days. It's easy enough, and cheap enough, to just buy a ready made AK.
One also has to wonder how many more unrestored Saigas will be available in the future. True, the trigger leaves a lot to be desired. Wish I knew a trigger source to pass along to the OP. It is what it is for all I know. It still goes bang and is accurate enough without too much fuss.
