So a shooting buddy recently bought several SAMCO rifles. One was a Swede mauser that had a issue, was still under waranty and sent it back. This was ball park 6 weeks or so ago. Hes tried to repeatedly call for an update on the repair to no avail. I had him contact the ATF as something seemed off. The ATF contacted him today and stated that SAMCO had declared bankruptcy and was no longer operating. The rifle is legally registered to him. Now the ATF officer handling this request has agreed to retrieve the rifle ship it back to him. Is this common? Its seems really off to me that the FFL is holding/can hold a gun even after they are closed for business.

Samco's been pretty darn sketchy for years. I'm not really surprised you arent able to contact them. I tried ordering/requesting shipping quotes many times over the years via phone calls and never could get anyone to answer.

I'm amazed the ATF is willing to help.

This blows my mind. :what:

I'm stunned that the ATF would be helpful in any fashion.

Did Hell freeze over?

All that juicy new Fed funding, lol.
My understanding (based on absolutely zero personal experience other than a single phone call to check on the status of my C&R application, but from having talked to many people who deal with the ATF on a regular basis) is that as long as you're dealing with an Agent (not armed, auditors, bureaucrats, etc), and not a Special Agent(armed LEO), the ATF isn't too bad to deal with and can actually be quite helpful.

Now, if you're on the receiving end of a "visit" from a Special Agent or seven, you'd better have a good lawyer on speed dial.

If it works out, your friend really is lucky. Sometimes when a debtor in bankruptcy has custody of property not part of the bankruptcy estate and not available to satisfy claims of creditors, untangling things can be a real hairball.

I haven't bought any thing from them in years. Anything I got was pretty good and price was reasonable. I hate to see a company go broke and close.

You might also be able to contact the bankruptcy attorney (or trustee if it has gotten that far). Such a return would not be an asset.
