I have a S&W model 28 that I shoot 38's with. I am using 3.5 grains of bullseye. Would this be an acceptable load to shoot out of my Marlin 1894C 38/357 rifle. I have heard that bullseye is an extremely fast powder and that I should use a powder that was not as fast burning. Is this really the case, if so what would be a good powder to work for both guns. I am looking for something that I could make up and use in either gun. Presently, I am using 158 grain RNFP bullets. Thanks for any help,

Jazzman

I would go with either Unique or Blue Dot. I use Unique as a light load powder for my Mod 94 30-30 and have recently started using 2400 as well...but I am thinking that 2400 might be a bit too slow for that 38...

Of the two, Blue Dot would have the best results, I think. Less fouling and less smoke. :)

I have been using 14gr of 2400 in 357 casesin my 1894c and I could probably go higher. But since you are using 38 spec cases I think your load will be a real light load and should shoot like a 22.

Thanks for the replies. I do have unique which I will try. I am just looking for a light plinking round. I may eventually get interested in the cowboy shooting but for now just looking for a common cartridge.
I may step it up to 357 so any common loads there would be appreciated. I would be looking for something mild in the way of the 357 for the revolver though as I want to keep muzzle flash and recoil manageable for my girlfriend to shoot also.
Thanks for the help,
Jazzman

I use 6.3gr of Win 231 for both in 357 cases and it gives a good clean burn and a little more ooumph than bullseye or unique, but not obnoxious in a handgun.

Bullseye will work fine in the rifle. Slower powders will give you a bit more velocity, but it sounds like that isn't your goal. Not broke...don't fix.
