Someone here told a story about someone ringing the door bell and breaking in.

Well, someone rang my door bell at 3am. I recalled someone's story here on THR.
So I knew that someone might be considering breaking in. My mother kept telling me to not answer the door. But I knew that if I didn't show any sign of life, someone might break in. I couldn't see anyone. My father convinced me to call 911. And the cops showed up and agreed that they must have left. I guess, it's better to be safe and call 911.

I just realized that my front door bell is obscured. So it was most likely the back fence door bell. I had turned on my lights to find my clothing. Someone can see the lights turn on from the back fence.

With scenarios like this...people seem to confuse "opening the door" and "answering the door". You can answer the door...without opening the door. Answer the door (so they know someone is at home) but do not open the door. Have your weapon and a cell phone handy. Remember, no one can make you open the door. They may kick the door open...but that would be bring negative consequences on their part.

(BTW, By not answering the door...they make think no one is home and then decide to kick in the door.)

i'd personally invest in some motion detector lights for the exterior of your house. if you can flood your yard with light when someone walks onto it that is a very good deterrant to a would-be burglar.

as TheProf stated above it is never a good idea to open the door when you do not know who is there or what they want. personally i like the slide style locks that use a bar ( not the chain locks) they allow you to open the door slightly if you need to speak to who ever is out there ( ie. someone who's car has broken down and needs to use a phone.) without giving them access into your home.

Ringing a door bell is a long ways from breaking in. Stranded motorist? Someone at the wrong house? Maybe a neighbor managed to lock themselves out and needed to use the phone?

Any response you come up with to that doorbell ring should be in the context of being a good neighbor. You need to stay safe, yes, but you also need to make sure that's not Ms Wilson from two doors down who went looking for Mittens and couldn't get back in.

Heard over the scanner someone else would have their doorbell ring over and over and can't see anyone.

If someone wanted help, they should have waited for me to goto the door.
