Excitement last night

Why not just position your jeep so that it is facing the area where you need light and leave the switch pulled on you headlights?

I agree, it would've been a good idea to ask whoever beat on teh door what they wanted before calling 911, those are busy people and don't have time to deal with "someone knocked on my door!" But then again, I don't know what the situation was, I wasn't there. Better to be safe than sorry.

Good job Paul. You took action. No one ever reacts perfectly to any situation because they are all different. If you don't think of things you could have done better, you're not thinking hard enough.

After-action critique is an important part of any response. It's the part where we all learn from your experience. Thanks for teaching us all something.

Update

Thank you all for your responses.

I wanted to give you an update. It has come to my attention that several more neighbors have had people bang on their door and run. The cops have been called on numerous occasions now.

That is not the worst of it though. Yesterday my Ex’s neighbor got home at maybe 6 PM, she locks her car but leaves the garage door up. As one of the neighbors that had their door pounded on at 11PM a few nights back, is taking a look around the area and she sees FOUR people in this woman’s garage! This is the townhouse unit attached to my Ex’s unit. Two male, two female. She yells at them and they take off in a car. They call the police and they come take a report. As the neighborhood people are mulling about talking the girl that saw these miscreants sees them drives by again. Her mother takes off in her car to follow and finds out where they live. Again the police are called and they contact these punks. They lie and tell the police they had nothing to do with it. Big surprise. Well one would think that having someone see you commit burglary and then be contacted by the police would be done for the night. Oh, how wrong you would be!

Later on that night about 9:45 to 10 all four people come back and brake into the garage of the woman who followed them! Payback? The early twenties daughter that eye witnessed the first garage/car brake in runs out and tackles ONE OF THE GUYS! Needless to say she has more guts then tactics. The guy manages to get away and hop into the getaway car, which is well know now (seen twice by the same 20 something girl and once by her mom). The police now pretty much know who is responsible for the crap going on in the neighborhood.

These punks are coming across a major street to screw with another community. They don’t live in these condos they live in some houses about a mile away. I guess they don’t want to S#%$ where eat, or they rove around causing problems.

I feel better knowing that these things are being done by “teens”, however I feel much worse now considering the brazen nature of the daylight violations. Four people in the neighbors garage and she’s home at the time! Luckily my Ex and kids where out buying shoes when this happed. Otherwise there would have been about a 99% chance the kids would be coming out of the garage to play as this was happening.

What’s in the works. More lighting. Motion sensor lights for the back and possibly the front. The front is already well lit but motion detection lights could be more helpful.

Pepper spray. The Ex simply will not go for a gun. This is one of those times and people that a gun would end up being worse then pepper spray because she doesn’t have the mindset. I know momma bear and her cubs, but she doesn’t want a gun and a gun therefore is not the answer.
Alarm the windows. Keep on the cops to patrol.

I don't know if contacting the parents would be good or not. If their back out the very night the cops contact them, eather the parents aren't around or they are not going to be helpful...If you know what I mean.

Again, thanks for allowing me to be so long winded.

How come the police did not grab these punks the first time? There were witnesses and the garage is full of the punks' fingerprints etc. What are they waiting for? AFAIK, attempted burglary is still a crime.

If your ex is too stupid and weak to handle owning a firearm (no offense intended) then a good dog might be useful. I'd hate to see your kids get hurt because their mom is a blissninny. Don't mean to come across harsh, but people who are so enamored of their own foolish prejudices they won't take care of their children really vex me.

I had a similar experience when I was first dating my wife. She lived in an apartment a few minutes away from where I lived. Late one night (~0200) someone was banging on her door and hollering drunken obscenities. We can't prove it, but we're %90 certain it was her deranged, drug addict ex-father-in-law who has a history of stalking her. Well, she calls and wakes me up. I tell her to call 911 and that I'll be over asap. I get dressed at Mach 1, but I hesitated over which weapon to take. I knew the cops were on their way to a report of a deranged man so I hesitated to bring my 12ga Mossie. The same reasoning ruled out my machete. I ended up going with the aluminum baseball bat. Situation turned out well. Perp fled before I got there, cops were nice to me and my wife. Still a scary situation, tho.

To this day I dunno if I made a mistake in skipping the shotgun in favor of a contact weapon. All in all I figure I stood a better chance of getting waxed by a nervous cop than of losing a fight with the crackhead stalker.
