This is interesting. If the Army does decide to replace the M4/M16, then would be the time to also adapt a new cartridge if they were interested in doing so.

So lets pretend that the military switches to a new rifle. I have two questions:
  1. What are the possibilities of a cartridge switch given so many NATO countries use the 5.56?
  2. What would the new cartridge most likely be and why?

They won't change the cartridge... I think if they adopt anything (fat chance) it would be the HK 416....

If I recall correctly, HK 416 is currently being tested with several groups in Iraq among others.

Does anyone know if the HK 416 is just an upper? Would it fit interchangeably with a standard AR lower?

H&K is trying to sell the US military retro-fit kits. Basically just uppers to bolt on.

Of course, they are trying to sell full rifles, too.
