I horse traded for a Colt Combat Commander in electroless nickel yesterday. The pistol is no longer original, the sights have been changed, the grips swapped, and the ejection port has been lowered and flared. The work on the ejection port is well done, but of course, irreversible. The work done is still bare metal.

Thus.....I have a Combat Commander that is ripe for further customization, and finally refinishing. I am considering more than simple reversible parts swapping. I'm thinking about a heavy dehorning, french lining, serrating the front strap, cutting it for an Ed Brown beavertail (or severely dehorning the grip safety), and possibly a bobtail. I'm also pondering taking it to Clark's for a Meltdown. I'm considering a hard chrome finish when done, or possibly Robar NP-3.

The serial is 70SC559XX. Does any of that mean electrolysis nickel? If so, I'd like to keep it nickel. Does anyone do electrolysis nickel?

Finally, are the electroysis nickel Combat Commanders scarce enough that I would be making a big mistake here? I know a lot of that is subject to opinion, but I want some honest thoughts before I cut.

I can't speak to finish questions but I am an advocate of the Bobtail. I think you would love it. I have two and they conceal better than my Kimber 3" Ultra Carry II. The curve of the Bobtail just naturally nestles into the curvature of my palm, providing a more secure, natural grip. I also always felt a bit of discomfort with the standard grip's point digging into the heel of my palm, on recoil.

There are two types of nickel plating , electrolytic ,that's the one they've used for years and is the shiney type . Electroless as the name says doesn't use electricity and is nickel with a small amount of phosphorous. This is the dull grey type and is harder and mor e durable.
