Anyone own one of these? My buddy is huge into LR shooting and I'd like to get an affordable rifle to play with him and learn LR ballistics and shooting.

I was looking at Rem's 308's but everything I can find says the high end Savage shoots better out of the box. I've found posts from a few years ago but nothing newer.

Be shooting out to a thousand for praire dogs then praire hunting inside 500.

I'd like to suppress it too. Any thoughts on a can?

Probably get a NF NXS or a Loopy Mark 4 for glass.

Now to save some money...

I too believe the savages shoot better! I have a .308 pc that shoots incredibly good and I shoot it suppressed... look at the vortex line of scopes to get more bang for your buck... I have a 6-24 pst ffp new for $900 and a 4-16 hst for $550... they are incredible optics for the cost... I took a whitetail doe this year @ 875yds with the pst...

What can are you using? I just don't see a need to have to wear hearing protection when it's hot outside and the muffs are sweating lol. And my ears are so far gone at 28 I'll be using hearing aids by 50.
I've got a Vortex Viper HS LR and the glass on that particular scope is bad enough I won't buy another one of their scope. But their binos are outstanding! But that HS LR model can't handle the sun, it gets washed out even with a shade. Then in low light good luck. It can't keep up with my VX3's. But they make great binos, go figure..

I'd like a 260 but my buddy said I'd learn more on a 308 first then go to the 260.

What bullets you shooting through yours?

In my .308 I shoot the berger 175gr vld, in my 6.5-06 is shoot the 140gr berger hybrid, in my 6.5 Creedmoor I shoot the 123gr amax, in my 7.62x54r I shoot the 190gr sierra mk

I have a 10FCP-SR in an Accustock, not HS Precision, but I think it's the same action. It shoots well - MOA w/ Federal GMM. It would probably shoot better w/ a better shooter running it.

But one caveat - The threads weren't quite right. Thankfully I used one of the Geissele (sp?) rods to check alignment, or I would have had a baffle strike on the first shot. I had to recut the shoulder to get proper alignment of the suppressor.

I'd look at 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 over the 308 caliber. No experience with the LRP though. Also might want to look at the Ruger Precision Rifle. Many are saying it's the best out of the box rifle for long range precision shooting.

The lrp is outstanding! It's well built from top to bottom and will probably out shoot most people's abilities. Savage is the best out of the box rifle out there, hands down!!! The RPR looks good, but to get it to shoot like a savage you will have to upgrade the barrel... so add another $600 onto that, and it has one word in its name I've never seen with accuracy. .. that word is ruger!

The most accurate rifles properly tested keep all fired shots at 1000 yards inside 5 to 6 inches in perfect conditions.

The best marksmen doping wind for a 1000 yard target miss their point of aim with their first shot by 10 to 20 inches already having a zero that day.

With decent bullets drifting 8" at 1000 for a constant 1 mph crosswind and dropping over an inch per yard, things get tough to deal with. Especially when you have a range error of 10 yards and the crosswind speeds vary in height above the line of sight and they're not constant from muzzle to target.

All of which people shooting a 1/2 MOA benchrested in free recoiling rifles hand held against their shoulder are very pleased to keep all fired shots inside 20 inches a thousand yards away.

I only want to clue you in on the realities of long range shooting. A great challenge hunting 4" X 10" pasture pups 36000 inches away.

I bought the Model 12 BVSS in .223 for my son. It's the first and only rifle I've ever shot that was .05 MOA out of the box. I'm sure the model 12 LRP would be similar.

oops, 0.5 MOA.

I'm not ready to quit my day job and go on the shooting circuit

Before NRA barred silencers from F class, we had a couple of guys shooting suppressed .308s.
They were NOT ear safe. I would not want to shoot or score for one without plugs.
Are the "cans" so much better now?

I went with a Remington Milsec in 308. Sorry but too many friends and relatives make their living at the plant. Heck, I was born in Ilion. Live a good hour away these days. Put the action in a Xray Stock.

That said, no comments please. You can't go wrong with the Savage. I have one in 223 and its a shooter. I did have some trigger issues with firing upon bolt closing, but I fixed those up with some help from friendly people on this forum.

I have three Vortex Viper HS LR Scopes. All three have excellent optics.
