To my pleasure and surprise, I recently acquired a Savage 110 30-06 rifle from a relative - black synthetic stock. It fills a nice large-caliber bolt-action gap in my meager but growing collection of toys, and I look forward to doing some hunting with it.

That said, I'm pretty unfamiliar with this rifle and my searches haven't turned up much info.

1) It's a Model 110 SPRG. What does the "SPRG" mean?

2) It has a cheap Bushnell sportview scope. I'm planning on replacing this with a Vortex Diamondback 3x9 - good idea or do you have other optic suggestions instead?

3) What other relatively cheap (ie. < few hundred bucks) upgrades should I consider?

4) In my searches, I saw several references to "accu trigger". What is this, and how do I know if my rifle has it?

Thanks in advance

:)

SPRG = Springfield...think of it this way. You could say 308 Win but it means .308 Winchester some just say 30-06 but it's really 30-06 Springfiled and to shorten it up a bit 30-06 SPRG on the side of your barrel from the mfg!

The Savage 110 is a good inexpensive rifle know for shooting straight. Should be a good gun for you.

Awesome, thanks for that info - that makes complete sense, but it's my first 30-06 so I wanted to check.

I have owned a Savage 30-06 model 110 for almost 30 years. My primary rifle for hunting.

The "Accu-Trigger" is a relatively new development on recent model Savage rifles.

I don't ever worry about "upgrades" on a bolt-action hunting rifle. A decent leather sling, sorta wide where it goes over my shoulder. I tend toward the 3x9 scopes, mostly just because I can afford them--but most of the time when I've shot a deer the scope was down on 3X or 4X.

I haven't bought a new scope in a good long time, but most folks here seem satisfied with scopes in the $200 range for most hunting use.

I've always sighted my '06 for two inches high at 100 yards. That's right at dead on at 200 and about six inches low at 300. Plenty good for 95% of hunting.
