I would like to remove the muzzle brake but efforts to screw it off (without a barrel vise) were unsuccessful. Savage tells me to take it to a gunsmith -- which is ridiculous CYA.

Anyone remove it? Do I need heat? Barrel vise?

Are you trying to remove it for cleaning or some other reason?
I’ve never removed the brake from my Savage 110BA in 338 Lapua Magnum so I can’t tell you how much effort was required.

I'll take a crack at this. There have been fairly frequent threads on the removal of muzzle brakes especially AR and some of the sub guns. We even found one with a left-hand thread.

Having threaded and installed a few on rifles, the brake is timed to the barrel by the thread relief. Need a little more turn? Cut just a hair more of the relief. Once timed, blend the brake and barrel for a seamless appearance. My threads were pretty tight, and I put mine on with some authority but not so it couldn't be removed for a thread protector, etc.

These days they are using a lock nut incorporated into the brake as below. I don't know anything about these. I would think you could time on both the relief or the nut. But that's another topic.

None of this helps you much to get one off. Some manufacturers use a compound on the brake that will require heat to break the bond. I'd call Savage and ask them about their installation method and advice on how to remove it. Heat guns, MAPP torches, but sneak up on it. Don't go hog wild. Too, some report that they have good results by going a little tighter which can actually help in removal. Now, that supposes you have a decent barrel vise and strap wrenches. Otherwise, take to gunsmithy fellow.

There was this guy whose wife used the rifle as well. He wanted the brake for her, but he hated them and wanted to be able to remove it. if Savage wants to argue, I'd bring this up. Your wife hates the damned thing and wants to remove it.
