My Brother In Law called me from a gunshop yesterday. He said they had a Savage 7mm. I think he said it was a 111. Synthetic Stock. It had a Swift Scope and I believe it was a 4x12x50.

He said it was kind of beat up like it rode behind the seat of a truck for a while. The owner of the shop said he got it from a Division of Wildlife Resources auction. I guess this is where all the poachers guns go.
All this for an out the door price of $250.00.

I don't know anything about swift scopes. Also I guess this is a "long action" and I am uneducated in the benefits between long and short actions.

I have been wanting a deer/elk rifle. I had planned on waiting till closer to hunting season. If this is a super can't pass up deal, then I will find a way to make it work.

buy the rifle.

it isn't a great deal, but it is a good deal. the swift scope is a fair scope - nothing spectacularly good or bad w/ it (i wouldn't pay any extra for the scope, but that's just me - and the price is already good, w/ or w/o the scope). it doesn't compare favorably w/ any vx1 or better leupold, but it is serviceable for big game hunting.

yeah, the gun is a long action. for your purposes, the difference between long and short actions are academic, but just for fun: short actions house short cartridges (308 family, the wsm family, 22-250, 220 swift, etc). the long actions house long cartridges (30-06 family, 338 win mag family <-- 7 rem mag is a member of that family, and most other magnums).

long actions weigh slightly more because the action is longer - slightly more steel (factory barrels are similiar, ie the 308 and 30-06 use the same barrel dimensions - they are just chambered for different cartridges). long and short actions generally balance differently - neither one is generally better than the other, as that is an individual preference.

if you want a deer and elk rifle, this is your gun. the 7 rem mag is an outstanding cartridge. recoil is stiff but manageable. 7mm's have outstanding bc's and sd's, and there is enough powder in the 7 mag for it to truly shoot flat.

go buy your rifle, then save your pennies for a reloading set up. the 7 mag shines in factory form, but it is absolutely brilliant w/ a competent handloader driving it.

should also note that long actions can house either long or short cartridges, while the short can house only short cartridges.

I bought the same gun. Well almost.

Savage 111, synthetic stock, Simmons scope, action a nd barrel look as if no rounds had ever been fired through it. Outside: the muzzle had the blueing rubbed off and the scope showed some wear on the right side. (been riding on the front seat of a pickup...I know the indicators well ;) )

Mine was just a .300 Win Mag.

My impressions...this gun is too light to shoot a round this stout. It hurts.
Yeah its a nice carry setup if you want to hump the mounts and shoot an elk. But to sit at a bench and ringout rounds, it's not much fun.

I bought a Browning A bolt in wood with the BOSS system and much prefer it for both activities. It is a little heavier to pack around but recoil is worth it.

I've had a model 111cl for a very long time. It is my have too rifle. Recoil from a bench gets tiresome after twenty rounds. Never noticed the recoil when shooting at game. Give it a good check out. If it looks to be in good shape it will do what you want. Ammo is everywhere. For a pack around in the brush rifle they are good. Most bang for the buck without weighing a ton.
