I've been looking for a new hunting rifle and I found a savage 111 in 7mm Rem mag with a Bushnell scope for $375 new, on sale at my local sporting goods store.

I've done some research but I honestly don't know a lot about rifles. I looked online and this rifle is going for around $550 at big box stores BUT they come with a Nikon 3x9. This one has a Bushnell, I don't know the magnification on it. So I don't know if it's the same rifle. Or maybe an old version. The store clerk new nothing. It's got a black barrel and plastic stock.

Is this a good deal, and what do you think of 7mm Rem for deer and black bear?

Thanks.

It's a fine deal.

I got the .30-06 XP with the Nikon a few years ago, and it's killed many deer.

7mm Rem will do the same, and the Bushnell came on one of the Axis's I bought off a friend. It's held up fine on a .243.

If you want a 7 mag it is a good deal even without the scope. You can get a much better scope than either the Nikon or Bushnell for $200 and have $575 in the combo.

It will certainly work. The 7 mags are excellent long range rigs for anything up to elk and could certainly be used on larger game. Recoil is just a hair stiffer than 30-06. As an all around gun for deer/black bear at normal ranges it is probably more than needed. There are other options that will do just as well at normal ranges with cheaper ammo, more compact rifles, and less recoil.

But you could do a lot worse.

I'm thinking of buying this rifle and seeing how I like it. If I get it and don't like it, do you think I can sell it for what I put into it ($370+tax)?

Sorry if that's not the right question to ask here. I have been away from forums for the most part for a while. I just want to make sure I'm not going to lose money as I don't have much to spare. This will be the only firearm i buy for a very long time, so I want to make sure it fits me in the long run.
Thanks.
