Anyway....the Garand needs an ammo buddy and I saw a sale for either a savage 111 trophy hunter or remington 700 ADL in 30-06. Just wanted some opinions on which might be better.

Thanks

I'm not a huge Savage fan, but can live with their short action offerings. Their long actions are insanely loooooooooong. If it were a short action chambering I'd call it a toss up, but would have to go 700 here.

I'm not really that big on 700's either. I think there are better options, but in this case it gets my vote.

What are your planned uses? If it's just to have, or to use as a deer rifle I personally think either will get the job done. I've had a few of both and I can't say one is better than the other. The Remington bolt isnt as wobbly when extended... Both are accurate.

Both are fine rifles with detractors and advocates. I have had many Remington bolts in my life but haven't been all that excited about their more recent offerings, at least not the ones I have personally held.
My favorite 30-06 and the one I use when I use that caliber, is a Savage. Absolutely NOTHING negative to say about it. I hear about the long actions but I use it for a deer rifle and I haven't needed a follow-up shot in many years.

I've had both, and in my experience the Savage had a smidge more accuracy potential while the Remington was less "clunky". Of course, the Savage was a 2005 model and my Rem 700 is from 1972.

Handle them both, buy the one that speaks to your soul.

They're both good actions, though I tend to lean toward the 700's personally. But that's probably just because I'm far more familiar with them, thus more comfortable and proficient working on them, tuning them as it were. But I'm sure that if I spent more time with Savages I would feel just as comfortable tuning them and making modifications / up grades.

But the one that feels good in your hands.

GS

As long as either one has a warrantee to cover defects, I have had them with both brands. Either should be fine for hunting. Out of box accuracy is in the same ballpark. Remington has a stronger action and faster lock time meaning they have more potential for competition accuracy and most people prefer the looks of the Remington. But still Savage builds a nice accurate stock rifle.
