I recently won a Savage Arms model 111 FXP3 in a 270 WIN in a raffle. I have never owned a Savage firearm and know very little about the rifle. I am not a deer hunter but do own a no frills Winchester 70 in 30-06 that I've had for years to fulfill the 'every man should own a deer rifle' requirement.

My question is, what is the general opinion of this particular Savage rifle? I did a little reading about the AccuTrigger and that looks interesting.

I don't really see a reason to keep this rifle and my Winchester as I don't plan to use them so I was thinking about trying to sell or trade the new Savage. Any reason I should keep the Savage and get rid of the Winchester instead?

Thanks.

The only reasons I can think of are the Savage may outshoot the Winchester and in .270 will have a little bit less recoil. Might even shot flatter at ranges over 200 yds.

But if you don't really shoot, just keep the one you like best.

Id keep which ever you like the feel of best. The savage does offer some customization options. If you decide you want to take up long range shooting (or what ever), it would be easy to put stuff on the savage.

I have a new Savage 11 (same rifle, short action) in .243. I really like it. But I'm shooting it quite a bit. If you're not really a rifle shooter, then keeping both doesn't make a lot of sense. The Winchester is probably worth more money in the long-term. The Savage will be more pleasant to shoot, if you do that at all. The Winchester should have a decent trigger. The Savage has a perfectly tunable trigger.

Bottom line: it won't cost you extra money to keep it. If you ever have a relative or kid around who wants to start hunting, you could loan them the Savage and not worry about it getting scratched up and so forth, being that it has that cheap synthetic stock that is perfect for dragging through briars and thorns, but they would be using a rifle that is accurate and has a decent trigger, so their success with the rifle would be easier than usual cheap loaners.

How much did you have to give for it?

Watch the TV show "The Walking Dead" on AMC Sundays nights and then ask yourself if you really want to sell your backup rifle.
(Think about it, what happens if all those Zombie cast extras get loose in your home town) :what:

Keep the Savage and join the brotherhood of the barrel nut. ;)

You could customize your new Savage and use it to shoot flies at 100 yards.

Or you could put a bull barrel on it, paint it then hide in the grass and shoot the Zombies at long range.

The possibilities are endless for your new accurate Savage, and remember how many guns are enough if your mother-in-law just happens to be bitten by a zombie?

Actually I won it as a raffle prize at an auction. I edited my origional post to indicate that.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm still trying to decide but this certinely helps.
