What do you guys think of the Savage 114 Classic? I'm considering one, I want the open sights so probably the Euro Classic in .30-'06. What do you guys think of this as an all around hunting rifle & perhaps a SHTF rifle(I realize bolt actions are not ideal in these situations, but I only want 1 rifle in a powerful, common caliber: I have a Glock 23 for this situation as well and I would like a .30 caliber rifle)
Also, what is the difference between the walnut lacqeur(sp) finish and the oil finish?
I know I'm all over the place on this site, but I've decided against a Marlin 336 most likely for the Savage in a more powerful caliber.
Thanks

me again..

..also, the Savage 114 can handle 'hot' hand/factory loads right?

Sounds great to Me.....

If I was in the market foe another '06, I'd certainly take a close look at one. I've owned at least eight or nine 110s and never had one that wasn't fine. You could do far worse. Good Luck, Essex

Savage makes good, functional guns for the price. Aesthetic appeal isn't their strong point - the barrel nut ruins the lines - so the gloss blued Classic doesn't appeal to me, but that's subjective. The only real fly on them is their plastic stock is a POS.

Lacquer is a shinier finish.

There isn't much decision to be made as far as handling hot loads. The weak point with regards to pressure of any modern bolt action rifle is the brass cartridge case. Factory ammo won't blow anything unless you do something stupid like shoot it with an obstructed barrel. If you get carried away handloading you will blow case heads long before any brand or model of action fails. And in our lawyer rich environment, all commercial actions are made to (usually) direct (most of) the gas away from your eyes in that circumstance.

CZ makes about the nicest blue and walnut 30-06 around for under $1000. And they're $550. Take a look before you buy anything.
