Savage 16FXP3, How Good?, Which Caliber

How good are Savage rifles?, I looked at the model# 16FXP3, stainless barrel and a mounted scope for $490.

Next question, which caliber (Action Short Caliber 223 Rem., 22-250 Rem., 243 Win., 308 Win., 270 WSM., 7mm WSM., 300 WSM.,)
I would primarily use it for target and maybe for deer.

Living in Massachusetts hunting is shotgun only, so I have very little knowledge in rifle calibers.

Is there much difference in ammo price for the mentioned calibers?

yes all the wsm's are more expensive to shoot.

.243 or .308 would be my first choices since you may deer hunt with it. Personally I'd stay away from anything with "short" in the name of the cartridge, unless you reload. Around here I hardly ever see the WSM ammo in stock, it may be better in other parts of the country.

I'll second Browning Guy's suggestions. .243 both have fairly light recoil (243 hardly kicks at all), and have cheap ammo prices. Both are great deer rounds.

Savage is very good.

Go with .243 Winchester, the tried and true classic.
