Hi,

I am finally building up a rifle for distance shooting (just punching paper, no hunting). There are clearly some very skilled people here so I wanted to get your opinions before I finalized my AR-10 clone build.

I’ve been plinking with AR15's, and am familiar with the system. In 08 I’m taking some rifle classes that require further reach than my AR15 can offer (out to 1000 yards). So I am building up an AR-10 clone lower (Fulton), and am having a custom shop build the upper. While I’m leaning towards .260, which would you guys choose for say out to 1000 yards?

They offer the following calibers for AR-10 conversions;

270 WSM, 260 REM, 284Win, 6.5 WSM, 7mm WSM, 300 WSM, 308 WIN Match

Any ideas would be most appreciated!

Many thanks,

No hunting or self defense role - 260 Remington i would be my choice - 243 next and then a 308. Check the charts - if you are really going to be shooting over 600 yards often the 260. If not then the 243. The 308 is a great round but not worth the extra recoil in your stated use. I would also buy a LR DPMS with 24" SS fluted barrel have a cryoed by DPMS and add a match trigger. Mags are available and priced right - customer service is good and you have a warranty.

Get a .260 for long-range paper punching. Heck, it makes a nice, handy hunting round for deer out to 300 yards too. Just depends on what you feed it! ;)

If it's for paper punching then .260 is probably best (or .243 maybe) as the .308 will give you more recoil. If you want some real power then go for the .308 but it should be noted that .260 is certainly capable of taking down many game animals.

I generally recommend against the AR-10 series because, on average over the last 5 years, they have not been reliable enough for 3Gun, nor as accurate as an average bolt gun (also slower MV than the average bolt gun). That said, if you must, I recommend going for a .260REM upper built by GA Precision.
