I've been hearing great things about the Savage 220 and am thinking about making it my dedicated deer hunting gun. I have been using a Remington 870 with a rifled barrel and a Leupold cantilever scope mount. Most of my shots have been from about 30 to 70 yds. With the Savage, I think I could increase my shot range out to 150 with no problems. Anyone on The High Road using this gun?

A friend of mine bought a Savage Bolt action 12 gauge slug gun years ago. Damn thing rocked. Easily held 2MOA at 100 yards with him shooting it and he wasn't that great of a shot. He got it for going to the "slug only" parts of PA. I don't know about the 20 gauge version but I would have to say that if it's built the same, it should serve you quite well. There are some that try to say that the 20 gauge isn't enough to rely on. I tell them to go out 100 yards, hold still, and take a shot from one to see just how far that 20 gauge slug would bounce off of them :D Never had anyone take me up on it or continue with that stupid line of thought. The 20 gauge slug is VERY potent.

I've not shot it, but my brother bought a 220 about a year ago. I know he tested a lot of different brands of slugs through it and killed a deer at about 115 yds with it last November.
I don't know which brand of slugs he settled on or what type of groups he was getting, but I do know he sold his rifled deer dedicated 870 20ga shortly after testing the Savage.
I had shot his 870 20ga and it was certainly no slouch.

The 220 trigger is going to be the biggest advantage over your pump gun. With Remington Corelokt sabots I was able to get 2 moa easy with a pump gun.

FIL's 212 slug gun is fantastic. Better than most production rifles. You are just limited by the trajectory of a slug.

Absolutely ridiculous!
I wonder if any of them shoot deer with 100 grain charges & sabots in their .50 black powder guns?
The ballistics of each are practically identical.

LOL matrem, most of the guys I know that say that ridiculous stuff are in the "magnum" crowd and believe the .30/30 isn't enough gun for white-tail

They seem to believe that deer have evolved kevlar hide :D

My hunting buddy has one and gets the best groups out of his with old Winchester BRI Sabots, 2 3/4", gets a hair under 2moa @ 100. Ugly as sin but gets the job done.
