How many different hunting guns?

Just one.....same one since 1990! From small big game to legal in most of Africa for the Big Five. Adequate velocity (trajectory, wind drift, energy) for shots well beyond 600 yards, yet light enough (9 pounds 1 ounce scoped, loaded, slung) for all day carry, and sub-2” 3 shot group capability @ 300 yards! Those are my reasons for having/using only one hunting rifle! memtb

Gotta be a .375 H&H…

Really, really close......375AI. A ballistic twin to the old .375 Weatherby!

Presently using Barnes 250 TTSX’s @ 3130 mv, when I finally run out of these, I’ll go to the. Barnes 270 LRX ....unless Barnes will “pull their heads out and see sunshine” and bring out something around 290 to 300 in the LRX version! memtb

Woo boy, hmmmm. Well, I enjoy having, shooting, loading for and using each one, so trying to explain why I have my collection of "hunting" guns is going to be pretty simple.

Some of my hunting guns were handed down; Rem 722 .257 Roberts, Rem 700 7mm Rem, Weatherby Mk V .300, Rem 1100's (12, .410), Rem Sportsman 58 12, Rem 870 20, Beretta A303 12, Win Model 12 16 Ga, Lefever SxS 16.

My other hunting guns were bought for fun; Ruger M77 RSI .243, CK 550 6.5x55, Mauser Straight pull 96 .270, Win 70 7mm Rem, 1894 Wins .30-30's, Marlin 336 .35 Rem, Marlin 1895G .45/70, Marlin 1895 C .45/70, Rem 1100 (12 Trap, 20) Browning BPS (16,20,28) Ruger Red Label (28), Stoeger Condor 12.

I'm not even going to get into the rimfires.

Others I have aren't "traditional" hunting guns...but I guess I could hunt with them if I wanted to. :)

I have no intention of thinning this herd, they will go to my kids when I'm finally done with them.

Stay safe.

I’ve been really happy with the 270 Gr LRX.

I used the 270 TSX for years, but wanted a much better BC. I called Barnes, I wrote many emails asking for a bullet with higher weight than the 250 TTSX. After several years, I gave up and bought a pile of the 250 TTSX’s. I was barely finished working up a good load, getting my turrets built for my Leupold CDS .... then they bring out the 270 LRX !

So now, I’m very slowly going thru these 250 TTSX’s. Then I’ll buy some 270 LRX’s, history will probably repeat....then they’ll bring out the 290’s I long for! memtb

I have this OCD thing where I hate having only one gun in any caliber. So I have at least two of every cartridge I own. Some I probably do have in excess like 22lr. But each one of those had its niche also.
Marlin 60 is for squirrels and rabbits. 10/22 wood carbine for small varmints and birds.
Synthetic carbine for ...well just because I wanted one and it will be my grand daughters one day.
Same with my hunting rifles and shotguns. Could I get by without a couple of them? Sure, but I prefer to have my 1100 for doves and rabbits, my 870s for ducks and turkeys, and another modified 870 for home defense. My old Springfield pump is for general truck duty and snake charming on the fishing boat.
A390 for trap/skeet but can fill in for other duties if needed.
I'm sure I could find a good excu....uhh....perfectly logical reason not to get rid of any of them. Yeah, maybe at some point some of them will need to find new homes, but not today.

Don't have near as many as I used to.
One thing, I didn't need any more spider
condos than I already had.
Other thing, no need in giving some
dope head another thing to pawn.
If they don't get used, they go to a new
home. There's a couple that are sentimental
that'll stay with me. One that might go
in the box with me along with a knife or two

I have a CVA Optima V2 .50 muzzleloader
A Remington 700 30-06
A Winchester 94 30-30

that pretty much covers the need I have for my hunting.
I don’t have the funding for more and to be honest I’m not sure how I would choose any more.
I have considered something with less recoil than my 06, but at this point that doesn’t bother me much yet.

This is where my OCD kicks In! I never owned a 6.5cm and didn't want one until wife and son-in-law decided they wanted to deer hunt with me for first time ever. She didn't like the recoil of my 30'06's. I bought her a 6.5cm Axis II, which meant I had to have one, so I bought a T/C compass. She liked my Compass better,, so the Axis ended up with my SIL. So then I had to get a 110 Tactical. See my problem? Nope no problem, still in denial !

Hugger, When the subject of hunting guns comes up......my mind excludes everything except “big game”! In that narrow job description.....I have only one “hunting gun”! And, like yourself, it has a close relative. :D

All other aspects of hunting are covered by various other tools with close family members! :) memtb

If you want a 30-06 with less recoil try some of the lower recoil loads from Hornady and Remington. 300 Savage performance might be a good option

I've known several people that had 1 or 2
or 3 guns, and did just as well as the rest
of the group.
There was one man that hunted with us
some years back that didn't have a full
time hunting rifle, and would start hitting
the pawn shops every year about this
time of year. He'd buy some old ugly
something for about a hundred or less,
and a couple of boxes of ammo. He'd
shoot it to check for zero and, if it
worked out he wouldn't shoot anymore
until time to kill his deer. ( we were
only allowed 1 buck no does at that
time) If he was through deer hunting,
the gun was sold, and he'd buy another
the following summer. He pretty much
always got his deer

I could do all the hunting on this continent with a 450 Bushmaster a 12 ga shotgun, and a 22 Mag. Maybe a longer range gun for out west like a 25-06 or some such. I’ll buy that one if I am ever going to hunt out there when the time comes.

As it is I have the 450 BM, 44 mag rifle, 444 Marlin, 30-06, 20 ga shotgun, and 22 mag as my hunting guns.

I want to consolidate more but I just love the 44 and 444 too much. I will get rid of the 30-06 in time.
I could hunt everything I still wish to hunt (and if my knees were better) with a 28 gauge shotgun and something like my 7-08 or my former 6.5X55 Swede; if I wanted to add a brush/hog gun, I would add a nice JM .357 mag Marlin

I’ve got a pile of Ruger No. 1s in various chamberings and an even bigger pile of ARs in different chamberings. Add in a smattering if bolt actions and I’d say I’ve got around thirty or forty “hunting rifles” and all of them could be replaced with one or two rifles, but life is short and guns are good, so I just keep adding to the various piles.

I have multiple because I don’t have one that will do all that I want done. Same reason I don’t have just one pair of shoes.

When my Browning X-Bolt stock went tar baby, on me, a couple years ago, I was glad I had my Ruger M77 in the same caliber. Took the better part of 2 months to get that stock back to "not sticky" and mounted on the rifle. I guess if you only do one type of hunting, and don't care about hunting, that much, one rifle is fine.

But what do you, do when you reach into your safe, a few days before the season is going to start, and your "go to"
rifle is down, for the count?

There are also a few different types of hunts, and types of hunting. Sitting in a blind, waiting for coyotes to pop up, at 300 yards is different from hunting deer from a stand, or walking the woods, shooting varmints. They take different calibers and different types of rifles, entirely.

If I only had one with a sticky stock and wanted to use it, I guess I would put socks over the thing (have actually done that when a butt pad turned mush.

I think the one rifle guys are kind of like the one tool guys. If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail…

I have nearly 200 guns and aside from the purely defensive guns, the vast majority of them were acquired with the intent of using them in the field. How many actually get used in the field is another matter entirely.
