I've wanted a .22LR for a while and happened on a fantastic deal on a NIB Savage model 64 FXP.

Well me being the type I am, I get it home and the first thing I want to do is completely disassemble it because I really like to understand how a gun works before I use it.

Well the owner's manual instructions for disassembly are TERRIBLE! It contains a -tiny- little photo and leaves out several important notes.

Most importantly, how the hell are you supposed to know how tight to make the two screws that hold the barrell assembly into the synthetic stock?!? I've already discovered that you can tighten the rear one enough to cause the stock to interfere with the bolt.

Thanks for any help. Sheesh, every time I start to think I know something I'll run into another gun that leaves me feeling like a raw noob!

Got no response here but ran into a gunsmith at the range and got a crash course on working with the Savage when you have a synthetic stock.

So, if anyone else runs into an issue or has questions and finds this thread then PM me and I'll try to help.

p.s. it's a pretty nice gun but I think a better scope is in order.

i got one, no problems accept for the constant jamming because of cheap ammo ( federal bulk 525 rds for 10 bucks). nice gun though, easy to disassemble and clean. put a larger scope (3-9 X 32) and always finish my box of ammo (500 rds) in the range. by the way, i bought it for my sons.

i'm not too fond of mine. its pretty accurate, jams a lot(cheap ammo), the screws are always coming loose, and the magazines fall apart every-other time i shoot it. one is now missing the spring so i'm down to one mag. the gun store wanted $18 bucks for one and i declined.

Hrmm, I hear lots of jamming comments. I ran 200 rounds through mine with exactly 1 squib (was able to pull the bullet out and there was NO POWDER?!?)

What ammo are you guys using?

I did notice a lot of crud in the receiver after 200 rounds. Maybe this gun is very sensitive to that. The only way to get at it was to pull the barrel and drop the bolt out (wonder if that will throw my scope off now).
