I have acquired a project gun, a Savage 67 shotgun. It is covered in ugly camo tape, and is in rough shape, under the tape is surface rust. I want to make it into a suitable general purpose shotgun. I do not know the gauge, as I cannot find a model number, yet. I want to know some good sources of parts, accesories and such. Any recommendations? My know-how of these is basic, most experience is with break actions.

They've been out of production for decades now, so replacement parts are mostly limited to places like Numrich or Jack First.

Accessories? That's gonna be hard, beyond generic stuff that can be made to fit most any shotgun.

It was a relatively low priced shotgun while it was in production, there were a reasonable number produced, but the design is less than stellar as pumpguns go and has a couple of notorious weak spots - it tends to break its single action bar, and the stock bolt screws into an extension of the aluminum trigger plate, which tends to break off if stressed. It's not really very field strip friendly for deep cleaning/maintenance/do-it-yourself repair.

In short, there are lots more rewarding/less potentially frustrating pumpguns out there to choose as "project guns." Lots of us here frequently suggest popular, current production pumpguns like Remington 870s or Mossberg 500s with boring regularity for several reasons, most of which tend to be the exact opposite of the list I just ran through above.

That said, I hope you got one of the ones that will run for a lifetime plus without breaking anything or giving you any trouble, and I hope you can make it into whatever you want it to be as a project.

Thanks Lee. I have checked on stuff and I think some refinishing and maybe a new fore stock and butt are all I really wish to do. It has seen use, but it is shootable, it has a very good bore. Whats a good type of slug to use?

Hello friends and neighbors // Add double feeding short 2 3/4" shells (all shell are not the same height...go figure) 3", mine does ok.

I keep it more as a fun gun then anything else.
It served as a local small town LEO's Riot gun, he said from 1968.

JC Penny Foremost or Savage 67H.
Here is a schematic. Numrich has some parts. Savage_77D,77E,77F,77H_schem.jpg

Good luck with yours, hope you enjoy it.
As Lee stated I get much more satisfaction out of my Remington 870s.

I've used Brenneke KOs for several years now in a variety of smoothbores, and been very happy with them. They aren't too expensive if you shop around, they're plenty accurate in every gun I've tried them in so far, they're hard lead, sharp shouldered slugs that cut neat holes and penetrate deeply, and they leave the muzzle at 1600 FPS. What's not to like?

And what about finish? I was thinking of getting it blasted to get rid of the rust, then parkerizing it, but what other finishes are good besides bluing, which i'm not a fan of. Its definitely getting blasted to get off the rust, its all over the barrel and receiver

Talk to the tech guys at Brownell's, they have a variety of finishes including spray on.
