Found this at LGS on consignment from collectors estate, beautiful bluing and brass, wood has awesome stripes and grain, but has a few small minor dents from possibly a wall rack.
Did the covid swab test,(Chinese :what: and American) and it came up negative for any residue, anywhere.
Has a period correct weaver scope and rings.
Chambered for 308.
Don't know much about these Savage 95 (my first 95 and .308) so any helpful information would be great.
Yes, I did pull the trigger, couldn't resist

Beautiful gun but, why does it have a rudder at the muzzle?

Todd.
Looks more like a sail to me..... But joking aside, that's a beautiful rifle. What is the barrel length? It looks quite long.
Jeeeeze, now you guys have me worried, am I going to have to redesign my gun cabinet??? https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...arted-on-my-gun-cabinet.870049/#post-11567594
OMG...I tried calling the LGS and it's after hours... IS IT TOO LONG AND WIDE... never say things like this to a guy with OCD... OK calm down, I'll measure my longest gun...ok, it's a 28 inch 12 GA... Now I fell a little better... OMG...THANKS GUYS...NOW I NEED ANOTHER BEER....

Too funny.

If that rifle is the greatest problem you have to day, I call you lucky! Heaven forbid it were not to fit in a cabinet and had to have a wall rack all to its lonesome.

Todd.

Gorgeous.

Don’t love .308 Win in that rifle, it’s at the edge of pressure capability, but loading down towards .300 Savage solves that.
Yup, my .308 M99 had extraction problems with Nato-spec 168gr ammo, probably due to receiver stretch. It was fine with most 150gr commercial loads.

Great rifle, though, congrats!

Its not a original, savage built it in 1969 or 70 as a commemorative, think ill still have issues?
Mine was built in the same period- of course it was also the clip-fed variant, which certainly didnt help with receiver strength any, having a giant hole machined in the bottom.......

Temporary receiver stretch is a known issue with '99 type guns because they lock up at the back of the bolt- fortunately it rarely causes permanent damage, but hard extraction and bulged cases can happen.

Id avoid anything marked 7.62 and stick with lighter bullets (or handloads as Doc suggested), and it should be fine.

That certainly looks like one to go back for to me. Congratulations.

That gun with no scope and a *period* tang sight would make a gorgeous hang-alone piece of walnut art.

I agree on the S&B .308.

SPCE from them at a touch over a buck a round is not bad these days for a good hunting round.

Todd.

I had that model from middle 80s until about 5 years ago, I sighted it in with a 2 1/2 Weaver with post in Redfield mounts which had a built in peep sight. As I remember the front sight was the right height to get it centered on the paper at 25 yards with the iron sights. These were made near the end of Savage USA original factory runs and are NOT as smoothly finished as the 60s and earlier guns however yours looks very well turned out and is probably the first ones turned out before they petered out and started making the 99 in SPAIN :( . The octagon barrel was way kewl ! They are indeed a 99 action tho marked 1895 . I sold mine for $900 and kept the 1958 .308 99F that is much more sveldt and finer finish. I have never run military ammo thru it but commercial ammo shoots and extracts beautifully and is quite accurate ! I have a Leupold 4x M8 Compact scope on it and have shot two deer with it in 30 years of ownership . It is an ideal deer rifle IMHO, however I have so many others I love more and my kids have no interest in it.
