Savage 99 club...

The 99 Savage rifle has been my primary woods rifle since 1966. That's when I got my 99F in .358 Winchester.

I have got the most big game with that rifle of any I own. I have other rifles including a pre-64 M70 battery, Rugers, and Brno 21 & 22 for hunting.

The 99 is a falling block action like the old High Walls yet its a repeater and one with CRF as well.

Here is one of my 99's.

Is that a DL model? As I understand, the DLs have the Monte Carlo stock.

Are 99s relatively easy to clean/maintain?

I had understood that the C model had the removable magazine and the monte carlo stock. But I am a newbie to the 99 so probably wrong.
I have a 99F in .308 which was made in 1964. I will post pictures when I get done fixing her up.

303 Savage made in 1903 in my deer blind last fall. Barrel was cut to 18" back in the 1960s, Stock was home made about the same time, scope is Weaver K2.5. That bolt holds the cracked stock together. My dad bought it and hunted with it for 70+ years. I hunt with it now.

Not sure how to post pics yet. I have 2 of the '99's, one in .300 and one in .250, they are both excellent shooters ! The .300 was my Pop's, my Mom gave it to him in '47, the .250 my Pop bought from a friend of his, that one is a scary accurate shooter !

1895 replica (.308) from 1969 or so bottom
I sold the bottom gun on Gunbroker 2 years ago for $800, it was a sighted in safe queen.
I sold about 10 years ago a .250 TD gun from the late 20s I shot one deer in the 80s with it.
I had a .22 HP/.410 TD for a few years in the 80s, it doubled in price in less than 5 years!
I grew up with a 99 30-30 with my Grand Pa shooting it every year for Penns. deer
My 99 F .308 with the see under mounted Lyman All American 4x scope is about the perfect deer gun for me in forrested areas.:)

Mainecoon,

That 99F of mine seems to have a deluxe stock. When I posted a picture of it elsewhere a comment was made that it was not standard. That someone may have switched stocks.

I refinished the stock in 1968 with a polyurethane.

The 99's are very easy to maintain.

Look for one in really nice shape. The 300 sav. is ok and the 300 Win is the most practical chambering.

To check the bore condition of a gun where you can't look thru by removing it's bolt. Open the 99's action and put a white piece of paper in the action and hold the rifle so that a bright light shines on the paper as you look into the end of it's barrel.

I like scopes on hunting rifles so make sure it's been drilled a tapped for top mounts. They used to put side mounts on some of them. I don't like side mounts.

I have a CF model in 300 Savage. My father gave it to me as my first deer rifle when I was 14 (that was 46 yrs ago). I had killed about 40 deer with it, untill I decided I wanted some more range (Ruger M-77/270). I must say that I hunted soo much with that old Savage, and shot lots of rounds through it. it became part of my arm. I was deadly on anything out to 200 yrds or less. I will alway cherish it because of fond memories hunting with my dad and brothers.

Have one in 243 Winchester.

What a sweet shooting rifle that is.

BTW, older gun with the brass round counter.

Definitely will be handing this down to a grandson; or daughter depending on the interest.

Want one in 308; someday.

Savage M99

Love that gun, a 1951 EG, that went from a grand dad to a dad then a son and passed sideways to me about 15 years ago.
It still prints 3 into 1-1/4" and 5 into 2" or less when I do my part, and prefers 165 Grand Slams or Sierra 150 round noses. :D
t's funny every time somebody says 99 my ears perk up. My shooting buddy p/u a 99F in 308 for $380 bucks last year in fantastic
shape at the gun show, that thing shoots even better than mine. Great guns!!

I was able to pick up a very nice 99EG from around 1958 (I think) a few months ago. I have done some loading for it and find it a fun gun to shoot. I never realized how popular the 99 is. Several of the old boys at the range recognized it as soon as I took it out of the case. Since I don't hunt, mine will only be used to punch holes in paper. I hope to get a mold and start casting bullets for it soon.

Very cool rifles. Hope to get one in 308 this summer. I've seen a few on gunbroker with a gold-plated trigger. Maybe this was a special run that Savage did for a few years.

Here is my 99, it is a 99A series A, restocked with a pistol grip stock and curved lever. I still have the original straight grip stock, straight lever, and forearm so it can be converted back to its original configuration. It is chambered in .308. I worked the trigger down to a very crisp 2 3/4 pounds.

.300 savage cast bullets?

I have been toying with getting into trying paper patched bullets for my 300 Savage.
Has anyone tried it?

Thanks, restocking it was one of my winter projects this past year. I have had the rifle for about 15 years, and killed some deer with it. I always wished it was a pistol grip stock, not the biggest fan of straight grip 99s. I bought the stock set off of Ebay, a guy on there sells semi-inlet stock sets for 99s. It took a lot of work, but it turned out really nice. The comb on this stock is higher, my eye lines right up with the scope now, before I had to lift my cheek off the comb to see through scope.

Here is a picture of the other side of the buttstock
