A friend has a Savage 99 lever dating back to 1911 which he wants to sell. it's 303 caliber. Can it be used since it's so old ? What would be a fair value ?

Thanks

Generally speaking, old rifles made to shoot smokeless cartridges are safe. But a gunsmith is the only person who can 100% give you the green light.

I'd offer him $400 and I might pay as much as $550, but check Gun Broker's site to get an idea of what they sell for.

If it has been cared for and cleaned occasionally, it will still get the job done.
The 303 Savage was a close ballistic version of the 30-30 Win.
The 303 Savage is not to be confused with the 303 British, and are not compatible.

Custom ammo is available for the 303 Savage.

As noted, check the gun auction sites for an idea of it's value.

biogenic,

Yes, they can bring very high prices. A G/S close to me has 2 Sav. in the .300 cal., asking $1200 apiece for them, the condition of both of them are no where near the condition of the 2 Savage's I have. The 2 I have are almost pristine compared to those 2, I have one in .250-3000, if they're asking $1200 for theirs, mine must be worth $2200 - $2500, and the .300 is as good of condition as the .250.
