Opinions of the 300 savage for hunting and where in the country this caliber is best suited, in what grain. any input apprciated.

Any old timers have any stories? I got an old savage 99 from a family friend and I dated the gun back to the early 1950s, Its my current hunting rifle.

I used to shoot a 300 savage and throught it was just a little below a 308 in power. More than plenty with most game and just a little less on recoil and muzzle blast.

Good cailber have 2 in a 760 remington pump excellent deer cartridge and pretty good for black bear Recoil to me is almost non exesistant .. Would like to find one in a savage 99

The .300 Savage rocks. It is plenty powerful for deer sized game. My dad has a 99 Savage that he bought in the '60's and even older than that is the one that my grandfather bought in 1923. Both are still deadly accurate and utterly effective on the whitetail deer population of central Pennsylvania.
I actually want to have a 99 some day, but I have to go with .308 for logistics reasons. Still though, the .300 is a great round.
The only downfall is that factory ammo costs about $18 a box. But that isn't a huge deal if you only use it for hunting or if you handload (I have loaded enough for Dad to last him the rest of his life).
You don't see many around for a reason: The people who have them keep 'em.
