An old lady of my acquaintance has a minty Savage 99c, series A, rifle in .243 caliber that belonged to her late husband. Serial number is E518761. The stock is walnut and the checkering is cut. It may very well be unfired. I would guess it is a late manufactured rifle, probably 1960's or 70's. It is a very nice rifle, and I wouldn't mind having it.

I have no idea what this rifle is worth. I realize that I could buy it cheap, but I am not interested it doing that. The owner needs the money, and I want to pay her fair market value. What is the going price? Can anyone help?

I think $600 would be fair for both of you. The late 99's are hard to price, some auctions go nuts, while others seem like they go too cheap for the exact same gun in similar condition.

I'd say 450-500 bucks would be fair. If it's really, really nice like you say I could see possibly paying 600 for a 99.

Box magazine? Just curious.

I sold one a few years ago to a dealer, got $400 for it. Probably could have gotten $500 or so from the right person, but didn't know where he was. It was a nice gun - I'd say $500 is probably about right.

I thank each of you for your reply. There seems to be a unanimity of opinion. You've been very helpful.

There is a forum devoted to the 99 Savage - I think it's called the campfire forum. I found it some time back looking up info on the two 99's in my family - both .300's.

A few years ago that would have brought maybe $800 around here. Not that much now. Glad it's not me, 'cause I don't need another rifle, but in that condition $500 would be fair both ways, and I don't need another rifle....

But, it would be great for my pronghorn hunt this fall. Actually, perfect. I'd be all over that. I had been looking for one for maybe five years.
