For you Savage Barrel swappers............Are all savage actions threaded the same? Will any Savage barrel fit any action? Or are there certain actions for certain things?

Also, How do I figure out what bolt faces will fit what calibers? Can you change the bolt faces or does it have to be the entire bolt?

There are regular and large shank barrels. the large shank barrels are a newer, not sure whne exactly they started, but I think it was around the time the short magnums came out. As to your bolt question, the heads can be changed out on the bolt. Keeping the bolt body. There are lots of different head diameters. A lot of cartridges share similar head diameters, but there's to many to name off the top of my head. Easiest way is to search them on the internet, or look them up in reloading manuels. Most if not all reloading manuels show case dimensions. Hope this helps, brian.

There are two barrel shank diameters. The larger one was only used for the short magnums. Yes you can change the bolt faces.

There are three primary bolt face diameters, .378" (223 size), .473" (30-06 size), and .532" (tradiional belted magnum size).

There are a handful of secondary sizes for less popular cartridges.

There are also long action and short action bolt heads in the various face diameters.

Some types of bolt heads are harder to find and/or more expensive than others, e.g. long action .378", short action .532", etc.

What do you want to do?

so with the shank diameter,

would it be possible to change a rifle from the factory in 22-250 to 7mmwsm or some other short mag?

also, is this something that you can do more than once, example, can you switch between barrels on one action for different seasons (ex, for deer season, and then back for varmints?)

Local shop has a 110 30/06 for 200 otd. Pre-accutrigger. Great metal. Good stock. Was thinking about a 6.5x55 barrel attached to it.

Would this make a good starter or would a accutrigger model be better?

from what I understand, the pre-accutrigger models don't have the best trigger, but you can always get an aftermarket trigger relatively inexpensively .

The "target" actions are also large shank actions

There are a few impossible bolt face action combinations. But only due to certain parts not being available. One that I know of is a .223 head on a long action

the savage or stevens rifles are great. accurate, cost efficient. you can adjust the pre accutrigger down to almost nothing. theyre great rifles. id get it in a heartbeat. i dont like the 06 but your could make it a 6.5 or a long line of others both short or long action cartriges. do it

Just about anything is possible with enough time and money, but I would not waste the time or money on this change. Why not buy one in that configuration instead? It would be cheaper and faster

budy of mine got a hand me down 110 30-06, with the pre accutrigger. we took a look at it and just by turning some screws we managed to get it to 2.5 lbs and it breaks like a glass-rod with 0 over travel.
i honestly cant tell the difference between it and the timney trigger on his AR.
just my $.02

That's not completely true, the pre-Accutrigger models had long actions with .223 bolt faces.
I had one,a 10fp tactical. The bolt said 4x4 Savage on it.I have also seen many factory long action Savage rifles that came with short action calibers.

I'm aware of the older long action .223's. But you can't build one today because either a specific firing pin or bolt baffle (I can't recall which) is no longer avalible

Tell me if I'm right here. I have never owned a Savage Centerfire, well I'm lying already I had a Model 340 30-30 when I was a kid, but my dad and brother in law lost it while I was working oversease back in 1969. But this Stevens 200 is the first I've ever owned in the model 10-110 series. What I want to know is how does the barrel nutt work. Isn't the barrel screwed in the receiver, but the barrel nutt used as a jam nutt so you can screw the barrel in or out to adjust headspace and then tighten the barrel nutt when you get it right? Or am I mistakened? If so, explain how it's done, please someone.

You've got it.

With a savage headspace is completely adjustable via the bbl nut

On a rifle like a rem700 headspace is cut into the barrel relative to a machined shoulder. To make headspace changes metal must be removed.

This fundamental difference is why you can buy fully chambered, user installed barrels for a savage
