Never heard of it, but came across one in a shop this week.

Very little info produced in a number of Google searches.

So what's the story? When was this model produced?

Are you sure it wasn't a Remington? Remington made a model 710. Cheaply made and not of high quality.

    Of course.

It is stamped 'Savage Arms', but that is the response I've found almost everywhere about the Savage model 710; people are not familiar with it and think it is really just a Remington 710 or a Savage 110. Some searching lead to the Western Field model 710 and it being cross-referenced as a re-branded Savage 110... dunno.

Here are the few things that come up in searches...

Most of those pages are inquiries just like mine, trying to find out what the Savage model 710 is exactly, and the responses are along the lines of yours. However, a couple there at the Savage Shooters forum hit the nail on the head.

Seemingly a very obscure model of Savage; most likely a m110 made for other companies like Western Field, Talo, Wards, ect. and so the model number is re-designated even when those brand names are not on the rifle.
