Okay so for my birthday my girlfriends going to buy me a rifle. now i already own a mossberg 500, and a smith and wesson m&p 15-22, but for my next gun i want either the savage 12fv in .223 or the savage axis in .223. they are basically the same gun just a big price difference. the 12fv has a much heavier barrel and an accu trigger. the axis doesn't not have the accu trigger or the heavier barrel. but there is a big price difference. for under 400 i can get the axis with a scope. but for just the 12fv no scope it will be close to 700.

I'd definitely go for the one with the AccuTrigger.

But not necessarily the heavy barrel if i had to carry it around hunting or something.

A heavy barrel does not always make a rifle accurate.

I have a 5.9 pound .223 CZ-527 American that puts all the bullets in the same hole when I can do it.
My hunting buddy has two of them in .223 and .204, and they both do the same thing.

depends on what you want to do with it but would probably go the axis myself just to much of a price difference the scope combos is usualy a cheap scope that you will probably upgrade anyway so you may not want to buy the scope combo if you cant stand the trigger buy an aftermarket one.

there probably isnt alot out there for stocks but i suspect they will become available in time see alot of people knock the entry level axis but savage actually made some improvements to it in my opinion and buds even have the ss models for 320 right now.

The Axis and the 12FV really aren't in the same class.

I'd personally take a Stevens 200 every day and twice on Sunday over the Axis, if only for the aftermarket options.

Depending on your budget, the Savage varmint line is quite nice - the VLP, and the BVSS being my personal favorites. They aren't your typical 'carry around the woods' rifles, as they are quite heavy ( 10lbs, and 9lbs respectively). If you're shooting from the bi-pod, or off the bench for targets, they'll make you smile everytime!

Does anyone have experience with the Weather Warrior line ? Im kinda stuck between that and a pretty 300 win mag SS and wood on Buds website.

The Axis is a very good rifle for the money. That being said, it is not in the same league as the 12, there is a reason it is twice the price. The Axis has a similar, but different action, and there really isn't any aftermarket add ons for them at this point. The scopes that come on the Axis package rifles are ok, but you will find yourself wanting something better if you are doing a lot of shooting. If the 12 is in your budget it is a great gun.

If weight isn't an issue I'd recomment the Savage 12 VLP. Mine in .308 is a pre-AccuTrigger and is still one of the sweetest triggers that I have experienced.

I've got a Weather Warrior in .260 for my primary hunting rifle and am very pleased with it. My handloaded Berger VLD's shoot 100 yard groups under 0.5", no kidding.

The plastic Accustock is kinda ugly, but it is impervious to the elements and that's why I bought it.

To the OP: As other have said the model 12 and the Axis are not inthe same league. The Accutrigge in the 12 is great. If you're wanting a range-only bench type gun I would buy the Model 12. It's heavy as could be, but accurate for long strings. On ther hand if you want a walk-around hunting rifle the Axis would do fine, but I don't particularly care for them. For not much more you could buy one of Savage's time tested models with an Accutrigger.

heres a review that compares the axis/edge to a stevens and model 116 savage rifles, im sure the 12 is a good choice if its not to heavy for what your using it for. regardless of what model you go with I think they will all be very accurate out of the box a better stock, trigger and heavy barrel is going to obviously cost more.

aftermarket triggers are availble from timney and rifle basix for the axis, it can have a barrel swap done to it also, aftermarket stocks are not available yet but im sure its just a matter of time.

Savage Firearms

Been carrying Savage Rifles and Shotguns to take Wild Game since I was 11 Years Old.
Still have some of the Old Guns and are still in Excellent condition after 50 Plus years.
Excellent Quality Standards (Including the Recent Imports)
My favorite Trap Gun is a Stevens 512 (Import from Turkey) by Savage Arms over my Beretta.

I have a Savage 12 BVSS w/accutrigger. Its would be too heavy for all day carry with the heavy barrel and stock. It is a great shooter and I have been very happy with it.
