I have a chance to pick up a near new Savage Axis .223 from a guy who needs $200 quick. I would have to add a scope and it has the old trigger and lite barrel. Looks new to me.

Just wondering what you guys think of these rifles. Thanks.

For $200 you aint gonna get hurt,You can't buy a used Handi-Rifle for that,I think the handi rifles are slower twist too,The Axis will be 1 in 9 which will handle most bullets under 70gr..I bought one used in 7mm-08 with the non-accu trigger, and didn't care for it.It had a big long Bushnell scope on it that worked fine, but I had a Redfield Revolution I wanted to use on it,and was disapointed when the bases were space to far ,so had to go with one piece. The trigger was real heavy.I found a perfect spring for it in an old zebco 33 that was slightly tapered, and it even threaded into the hole like the original.now the trigger is just fine for my taste,so now that I have the bugs worked out it's a decent gun for what I have in it...Then not long after I got the 7mm-08 a guy I knew offered me a deal I couldn't turn down on an camo Axis in 223..He was wanting $350,but I talked him down to $325.I only payed that much because it has a nearly new Burris predator quest scope camo scope, and it had a really nice sling an case.He threw in a boat load of ammo..I liked this gun from the get go,and even the trigger felt decent.I asked him if he reworked it,and he said no.I tore it down just to be sure, and the yellow paint type stuff was still intact..I guess the triggers may be hit,or miss, both these guns are sporting weight barrels, but both are really accurate..The clips are cheap,so I only put 3 in the 7mm-08,and 4 in the 223 so it don't strain the plasitic tabs holding the bottom on the clip..They are a cheap, but usable gun that will do anything that a nice gun will do,and you don't have to worry about them getting scratched..

Buy it. Keep in mind it is a 1:9 twist so match bullets and barnes 70 solids are out.
But otherwise it is the best entry level rifle with a very strong action so always a good baseline for something else.
Also easy to do a few inexpensive upgrades if you want like the trigger.
This is the rifle everyone is trying to copy for an entry level. What most don't have is the consistency of the savage barrels.

I have an Axis .223 with the cheap package scope on it and with my hand loads is shoots very similar to .243win's pictured groups. I have shot several 20 round groups and they are all around 2" @ 100 yards which I think is good for such an inexpensive rifle. Go for it!

No doubt buy it,I have 8 Savage rifles all either the old Edge or newer Axis and one 10 and one 11...there is a reason I went all Savage with my bolts and it's not looks.
