I'm currently working on a little rifle project. I want to take a Savage Axis in .308win and get an aftermarket stock, duracoat it and set it up with some nice Weaver glass (not sure what I want on that end). I know already that the .308win is considered a short action. When I was looking at aftermarket stocks it said that you need to know the receiver screw distance and match it up to the stock so you can get one that fits. However, the info I could find on Savage rifle's reciever screw distance is only for the "numbered" rifles like 11fcns or the 16fcss. I don't have an Axis rifle to measure but the stocks I'm looking at state that the holes need to be 4.275 inches apart for short action or 5.062 for long action.

I'm not sure if the Savage Axis uses the same reciever as the rest of the Savage rifles and don't want to drop the money on a new rifle and not be able to do what I want with it. If anyone has an Axis and can tell me the distance on their rifle I would be extremely greatful.

Cheers, Hank.

i think that calling/ emailing savage directly will get you the fastest and most accurate answer.

I concur...contacting savage would be the best bet. In addition, the .308 chambering does not ncessarily mean a short action. I have and edge/ axis in .223 that has a long action with a magazine spacer. I would also consider keeping the factory stock as it is perfectly functional.

Well I called up savage and it IS a short action with 4.275 inches between. Their customer service was actually very helpful and I was reluctant to call considering I've never personally owned a Savage product.

I would also consider keeping the factory stock as it is perfectly functional.

I understand that it's functional but, I'm not a fan of the thin wrist and the material they use. If it were an accustock then I'd leave it be. This IS a project rifle after all so I'm going to modify it to my preferences.
