With the warmer weather coming (finally), I'd like to get a couple of good .22 guns. I plan to get the Ruger 10/22 but I'd also like a good Savage bolt since the prices for both guns are very reasonable. Which model should someone my size (5'2") be looking at?

Buy the Savage with a wood stock.
If it doesn't fit you can cut it down.
Same thing with the 10/22.

I bought the bull barreled bolt action for my wife, and she loves it. She can hit beer bottle caps at 50 yards with the thing all day long, it is a real tackdriver. I sighted it in for CCI CB bullets (the really quiet ones) and take out pests with head shots anywhere in the yard. I prefer the heavy barrel, even for hiking in the woods. My wife and I love her Savage .22. I think we paid $200 for the rifle with the 4x scope and have not had a bit of trouble.

I happened upon a Mark II LV (now called the BV but unchanged otherwise) about two years ago and couldn't pass it up based on the price ($179) and the features included.

I've since added a Rifle Basix sear, and absolutely love this gun.

Cloverleafs @ 50 yards using $.89/50 Federal Lightnings. :) Oh yeah, that was before the sear. :cool:

Now I just use it for treerats.

*Edited to add - The LV/BV is the laminate bull barreled blued one.

Here's Savage's youth model.

Charlesdaly by CZ

The Daly rimfires are made by CZ. and IMHO are a tremendous value.

I recieved one for Xmas in .22lr. from my wife and am real happy with the rifle.

It has a two stage trigger that is a little heavy and coarse in the first stage but breaks light and crisp for let off. This set up sure beats the heavy triggers found on most similarly priced US bolt rimfires. I don't care for the stock sight set up and am putting a scope on it this week. Great shooter. I think the trigger will smooth out in the first stage after a brick.

The european Imports are the best values around but I don't know how long it will last with the weak dollar. Fit is good and finish is fine for the price.

Mastro;

I'd also suggest the Savage youth. I bought the full size MKII a few years ago & am very satisfied with the gun. It's probably the best value of my .22 rimfire's. The primary reason for my purchase was the fact that it's available in LHB, & it has NO competitor's in it's price range. But I've been pleasantly surprised with it's accuracy also.

If you get one, there are several easy things to do with it. If you're into working on your guns & want to discuss it, by all means PM me.

I've been zeroing in on the Savage Youth. It looks like a nice gun and great fit. I'll have to do some looking around for it. I'd love to pick up this gun and the Ruger 10/22 this summer so my father and I can spend more time at the range. Thanks for the information everyone. :)
