I'm looking for a bolt action rifle, Savage 10, remington 700, etc. I'd like one in 260 rem, but I'll settle for 308. I've heard great things about Savage and noticed that at Midway you can buy a complete action with magazine box for under 400.00 and in some cases 350.00. All you need is a stock and a barrel.

Any thoughts.

I think you can buy the complete rifle for that much. Just buy one in a caliber you don't want 7mm-08 has the best resell value. Then order a barrel and replace it.

Build It!!!

I built this 30-06 on a 116 action after I decided that I wanted a heavy barrelled '06. As you can see from the target (the first 'group' ever fired from the rifle by the way) I am quite pleased with it's capabilities. This rifle was completed w/ optics for about $800. If you decide build savageshooters.com is your friend. Pay the $12 to have access to the classifieds, and you'd be amazed at much money you can save. Savage rifles are an addiction in themselves, and you'll start wanting more barrels which leads to more actions, and on and on it goes.

And as mentioned above, a complete Stevens or Savage 'economy' gun may come out cheaper in the long run, and they make a great start.

Do it. I got a Model 10 action with a 20 MOA base for $300, $225 for a Shilen 6.5x47 Lapua barrel with brass and dies, and $150 for B&C Medalist stock. Did this during load development -

If someone tries to tell you that writing a check for a rifle gives you as much personal satisfaction as building it yourself, they are sadly mistaken.

On my back burner right now is a .260 Rem project on a Savage 10. My last build was a Savage 110 in .300 WM. I ended up way over budget on that one.

You may want to consider calling the Savage Custom shop and outlining your wants. I could of had them make the same rifle out of the custom shop delievered in 6 weeks faster and cheaper then my build which took 8 weeks just to get the barrel.
