Looked on Savage's web site and it looks like they will be offering their standard hunting rifles, the model 10 and 110 as well as the stainless Weather Warrior series in .260 Remington and 6.5x284 this year. With the Accustock and a proper 8" twist no less. Sweet! Been waiting for someone to produce these fine chamberings in an accurate hunting rifle with the right twist rate for heavier bullets. The Rem 700's had a 1 in 9" twist, and I'm not into Rugers.

I'll definitely be buying one this coming year. Just have to decide between the short or long action. Hmmm... Maybe a 6.5x284 for the better brass, I don't shoot my hunting rifles enough to burn out a barrel.

I'm glad to see their innovation in their new rifles with the Accustock and the smooth barrel nut. Never met a Savage that wouldn't shoot. I'm gonna send them a letter to commend them on their choice of offering these great calibers, I couldn't be more excited! I thought I was going to have to settle for a .270.

The 260 is a top notch light recoil round, and there simply is no better long range round then the 6.5-284. I would love to own both in addition to my 6.5x55 :) I just love anthing 6.5mm the are super efficient and kill anything that walks.

Is the 6.5 284 look exactly like the Swedish 6.5 x 55 ? Or completely different ?

The 6.5-284 is a whole different anamal. Higher case capasity, higher pressure spec, and shorter action. The 260 and 6.5x55 are about as close in performance as two rounds can be, and the 6.5-284 is about 200 fps over both of them.

Better check the actions and make sure everything is level :cuss:

I've also been toying around with getting a .260, and already have a Savage that I love (right now I hate because of the other thread running about the weather warrior series) so this will just throw another contender into the ring of which rifle to buy!

Yep they are offering a 6.5 Creedmore in the 11 Long range hunter too. Things are really heating up for us 6.5mm fans. I would not be supprised to see someone try to relaese another 6.5mm short mag sometime in the very near future. I have reserched this to death and have no idea why 6.5mm bullets have such higher BCs then other calibers with simmilar SD. The difference in SD between a 150gr 270cal a 190gr .30cal and a 140gr .264cal is microscopic yet the same design bullet from the same company yeilds a large difference. Burger VLD hunting for example .277 .531BC vs .308 .570BC vs .264 .595BC. I could do this all day long with a hundred bullets from a dozen different manufacturers, there really is somthing magic about those little 6.5mms.

Oddly enough I was looking at a Savage yesterday in 6.5x284. There are a couple local shooters who use that cartridge in custom rifles and it has intrigued me for awhile now.
But the Savage in question did not seem all that great. The plastic stock, and cheap looking adjustable cheek rest seemed just too flimsy for my taste. Plus the local, fishing boat supply, work clothes, hardware and gun store wanted a fairly steep price. But they are pretty much a rip-off for everything.

The 6.5x284 is considered by some to be something of a barrel burner. Like the old 264 Win Mag which is basically a 300 win mag necked down to 6.5mm.

One local guy is using over 57.5 grains of RL-25 to push 139 grain Lapua Scenar bullets over 3,000 fps.

Compare that to me using 46.3 grains of RL-22 to push the same bullet at 2,690 fps.

The 65.x284 is a real speed racer.

While the 6.5-284 is not easy on barrels it is FAR from the .264 Win Mag. The winny will eat through barrels many times faster. The 6.5-284 maintains 1,000yard match accuracy for 1,500 rounds, while the .264 looses HUNTING accuracy after only a 800-1000 rounds even with modern barrel metalurgy.
My reloading manual lists loads up to 77gr of powder for the 264 while 55gr seems to be about the max for the 6.5-284, VERY big difference there.

6.5 Remington Magnum is pretty close to that already...although completely obsolete. It is also 55mm in length, so I suppose not really a short action cartridge

I've decided it'll be a 6.5-284 whenever they start to show up at dealers. I've got a thing for odd-ish calibers, and it'll provide a good long range, low recoil alternative to my 45-70. The 260 can fit that bill too, but I'll eventually build a tactical type rifle in 260, and I'd like to keep the brass from getting mixed up between the two rifles.

I had planned to buy a stainless Featherweight Model 70 in 270Win, and the 6.5-284 will do everything it can and buck the wind a little better. White tail and hogs are all I'm ever gonna get around to hunting, and if I need something heavier I suppose the Guide Gun can do it. If I had the money to leave Texas and go on an elk hunt, I'd probably have the money for a 300 WSM if I felt the need.

Now for the waiting... Took forever to find my 1895SBL after they were announced, hope Savage gets them out faster.

Here's the 6.5x284(left) next to a 6.5 Gibbs and 30-06. The 284 Win case has roughly the same capacity of the longer 30-06 and has a rebated rim.

If I didnt already have a Cooper M22 in 6.5x284 I would be thinking of a Savage chambered in it, though I doubt that it would be as pretty.:D

The 284 reflects it's parent cartridge, the defunct 284 Winchester. Wildcatters necked down the 284 to 6.5mm and so the 6.5-284 was born. It was around as a wildcat for years before Norma standardized it as the 6.5-284 Norma. Not positive how to pronounce it. "Six-five-two-eighty-four?"

Pardon my ignorance, but what does 284 represent? Certainly not millimeters.
Being old does have some advantages...like remembering when cartridges started out.

The .284 Winchester was designed as a competitor for the .280 Remington...both 7mm chamberings

The .280 Remington was the factory version of the wildcat 7mm-06...a 30-06 necked down to handle 7mm bullets for better ballistic efficiency. This same cartridge was later re-introduced as the 7mm Remington Express

Winchester went the route of taking the capacity of the 30-06 and fitting it into a case the length of the .308. They did this by making the body a larger diameter than the rim...rebated rim. Then they necked it down to 7mm and named it the .284 Winchester

the 6.5mm-284 Norma is that 7mm case necked down for the even more ballistically efficient 6.5mm slugs

I know Savage has a lot of neat calibers out now. I am thinking of one in the .260 too, and the Model 11 in 7.62x39!
