I am about as close as I can get to buying my very own hunting rifle. While I was looking over a few rifles I noticed that the Savages with internal box magazines were center feed. Are these a PITA to load compared to the older style? In my friends old 110 I can just throw a round in there and press it down to load it, doesn't really matter where it lands. Thank you all.

I've got a new 12FV that is centerfeed in .223. Yes, it is a little more challenging getting the shells lined up with the opening in the mag. If you drop a shell in and it rolls towards the back (left side), you have to roll the rifle over until the round falls over to the right side, and then roll it up onto the center with your finger, and hold it there, while you press it down into the magazine.

I'd say difficulty level is a 3 on a 5 scale, and the regular stagger feed rates a 1.

I find that slightly annoying in my 114 (or is it 116?, I forget, it is the long action .30-06 one). It took some getting used to, my other bolt action rifles are M77's that I just plop the round in and press down.

The reliability and smoothness of the center feed system far outweighs the ease of use of the staggered feed system.

It is NOT that difficult! Also, have you considered the detachable box magazine (DBM) rifle from Savage?
