Savage, CZ or door #3?

I'm expecting to make a final decision about a new .270 Win. in the next week or two. No luck finding a CZ to look over, shoulder, etc. The Savage I saw has a 24" barrel and is SS over laminate. (I originally thought this gun was .270 WSM as that's what's showing on the Savage website for this configuration. It is the plain old .270 -- maybe last year's?)

Question: CZ 550 or Savage 16BSS?

Question: Would seeing/holding a comparable (at least comparably-priced) model that seemed to fit you well tip the scale enough to go with that one? As opposed to blind ordering the other which might be more highly recommended.

p.s. The stainless isn't a big concern of mine, beyond the fact that it looks good on this gun. Each rifle runs a little over $500 at the store I'm likely to use.

Q1 - A: Savage (just my opinion)

Q2 - A: Yes. Holding/shouldering a rifle/gun can sway your opinion. I had my heart set on a 10/22. after a side by side comparison, I felt more comfortable with the Marlin Model 60. A comparison also helped me decide between the Mossberg 590 and a Remington 870. Both would have suited my needs but the fit and finish of the 870 was head and shoulders above the Mossy.

To me, there's no contest. The CZ is definitely the way to go. It's a forged and milled gun with controlled round feed, double square bridges with integral dovetails for scope mounts, a single-set trigger, and a great blend of Mauser 98 and Winchester Model 70 design features.

The Savage receiver is made from steel tubing, has a washer recoil lug, and that ugly lock nut on the barrel. Plus the ones I've examined have crude fit and finish. Yes, they are accurate, and if that's your only criteria, you might be happier with one. BUT, I've never heard of an inaccurate CZ, either.

The only reservation I have with ordering a CZ sight unseen is the stock. The ones I've examined range from adequate to gorgeous. None have been unacceptable, but I'd prefer to hand-select one of the gorgeous ones

Definately a vote of the CZ. Or a Tikka. Nothing wrong with Savages, but they just aren't up to the overall 'niceness' level of the CZ... not by a long shot!

I pretty sure Savage is making the rifle available in the 270 Win and in the 270 WSM.

the new tikka T3's are a nice light hunting rig. the price is right and if they are half as good as the whitetail hunter it will be a hell of a gun.

i havent shot my T3 much becase i havent had time and the weather hasnt been the best, but i could hold 3 117 hornady factory loads in 1 1/4 inches.

not bad and they come in 270 win and the wsm, food for thought

Ordered a CZ 550 American in .270 Win. this afternoon. Asked the shop guy to enclose a note for the distributor saying it's for his grandfather's birthday and could he hunt up one with a nice piece of wood. Was (half-)kidding, and I think the distributor has one or two of this model on hand so I'll get what comes. Base price (with 5% member discount) came in at $454 which was lower than I expected. In short: WOO-HOO! Didn't pick up the scope yet, but that's looking like a Weaver Grand Slam.

I hope you like yours as much as I like both of mine. I think they're today's equivalent of Pre-'64 Winchesters; 20 or 30 years from now people will be scouring gun shows for them and talking about how they were made back in the "good old days."

I prefer the CZ. I believe the CZ to be the best bargain around today. I also very much prefer controlled round feeding.

You really need to shoulder the rifle. Even if it means a Saturday road trip to a nearby town. Good excuse to see some country and try a new gun shop anyway.
