I have read on a lot of websites that the new Savage Edge in .223 is also capable of firing 5.56 but no info on the Savage site. I know that there is higher compression when firing 5.56, can the Edge handle it? Safely?
The pressure isn't the problem the chamber is. I would bet that it is not chambered for 5.56NATO, but it could be a Wylde chamber made to accommodate it (and retain better accuracy with .223Rem.). Best to make a phone call to be sure though.
Many new rifles come with one of the "hybrid" chambers that allow you to shoot both 223and 5.56 safely. In fact the 223 only chamber is rapidly becoming obsolete.
and then there's the fact that the rifle in question comes chambered for belted magnums, meaning that even if the worst possible combination of 5.56 in a .223 were fired the rifle wouldn't even break a sweat containing the increased pressure.
Flame away
But I personally don't even consider 223 and 5.56 different when the rifle in question is a full sized bolt action
