Savage F/TR

Looking at purchasing a Savage F/TR in .308. Plan on using it in F-class matches. Any pros or cons on this rifle?
I'm new to The HighRoad, just found it today and love it.

I know that's a gun I will own someday. I think F-Class looks like a good way to break into rifle competitions.

The pro's:

Ready for F-TR right out of the box
Accurate
Good trigger
Good Stock
Also easy to change barrels if you need/want to in the future

Con's:

None really, only if the gun won't shoot you know it's not the gun

i thought the Savage F-class was chambered in 6.5mm-284 Norma??

The F/TR comes chambered in .308 or 6.5MM-284. both in 30" extra heavy barrel.

the 6.5 slug will give you better ballistics at the longer ranges

There are two different divisions of F-class, with different rules leading to two different model rifles from Savage.
F-open is pretty much anything goes for caliber, with the Savage factory F-open rifle made in 6.5x284 and 6mm BR.
F-T/R is limited to .223 or .308 and with a lower weight limit. Savage only lists .308 because that is what you need at 1000 yards. (A good .223 is a fine thing at 600 though.)

So far, anyone I know who has one, or has shot one, says their accuracy is above anything that they can personally do, it will shoot better than you can.
I want one of these, in their proprietary 5-35c loading.
A superhot 5mm round; over 4000 fps.

Savage F TR

I have one! I'll have to take some picture this afternoon for you. I have found nothing wrong with the rifle. The only issue (not a fault of the rifle) was a base screw that was a little long and hung up on the bolt. I have a Bushnell 8-32x40 on it. I load for it using Varget and SMK 168gr. I have a pic of some of my 300 yard groups, I don't remember the size but I think they are very impressive. I would buy it again in a heart beat!

I own one in .308, and its absolutely amazing for a range gun. Make no mistake, it is HUGE and very unwieldy anywhere but a bench or prone. Mine is a tackdriver with 175 SMK and a max load of IMR 4064 - I'm getting ~2790fps out of that (a 30 inch barrel helps your velocity nicely). It pretty much holds the 10 ring at 600 yards in F class, which is 6 inches. I haven't shot a 200, but I'm sure that is my own fault rather than the rifles.

My main gripe is the plastic cheek piece that it comes with. Absolutely terrible. It is literally off one of the Choate plastic stocks. It looks and feels awful and out of place, but worse it is squared, so it sets your face about 1/2 inch off line from the scope. You need to roll your head over to see out of it. It actually makes the reticle seem canted (or at least it did for me). A Karsten cheek piece would solve that problem, and I'll probably do that at some point.

The other issue is the butt pad, which is the standard hard Savage rubber (or it was when I bought it, don't know if they put one of the new pads on it). For me, the rifle is heavy enough that recoil is pretty much non existent, but just know that the butt pad won't help it any.

I've owned an F/TR for a year in .308. It was a shooter right out of the box. I load using Varget and the 168SMK and 168AMAX. I have not had good success with the 175gr SMK. I consider it one of the best rifles made for this type of shooting and I would buy another. Mine will break a clay pidgeon at 800yds on a no-wind day if I do my part. If I call the wind right, the 12x12 steel plate at 1003 yards behind the house is no problem.
