My son (17) is expecting a nice refund from the IRS and told me yesterday he wants to spend it on a new rifle like one of the Savage LE series.
Found a few on Gunbroker.com, the 10FP LEA1 in .308 with the Choate stock for around $550 plus shipping & transfer fees.
Good buy or are there better deals somewhere?

accutrigger model or not?

Cabella's (I believe anyway) is closing out the non-accutrigger models for $355.00...

If it's not an accutrigger gun then $550 is high in any event... you could buy a Tikka or CZ for that and have a barrel that won't copper foul like nobody's business.

Savage's shoot great but are notorious copper foulers and very hard to get clean...

People who claim Savage rifles are hard to clean have never heard of a bore brush.

Seriously, though, Savages do foul, but it's not insanely difficult to clean. If anything, a jar of JB Bore Paste is cheap and you can hand lap the barrel yourself.

I have a 110 in 25.06, never had much problem cleaning it. It's a tack driver without the accutrigger but that's an option I want on this gun.

Got a PM on the subject from mister2 on the subject, he pointed out the Choate stock is a love it / hate it kind of deal. Had a similar stock but a cheaper knock-off on an SKS once, hated it.

Checked at Wal-Mart, they can order the regular stock LE for $471. I'd rather buy from a dealer but no one locally has one in stock.

I ran a Tubb's Final Finish bore lapping kit through my 30-06 116FSAK and the barrel is now VERY smooth, doesn't foul much and is very easy to clean.

I have one it shoots great, I havent noticed any build up of copper fouling in mine, it seems to have a very smooth barrel bore that has been quite easy to keep clean.

I like Savage rifles, but stay away from their synthetic stocks. They are the weakest point in those LE rifles. Nothing wrong with the Choate stock tho, as long as you don't plan on hunting with it - three words: heavy, heavy, heavy! The $550 is a little high, but reasonable seeing as how you're getting a $175 dollar stock with it.

Also try to get one of the new Accutrigger models (for that price it's probably not one), huge difference between that and the regular trigger. Old triggers work ok, but there is no comparison with the new ones.

Nothing sticks out in my mind about any Savage fouling more than any of my other guns.

Have your son look at the Savage 10FP-LE2B. I think I paid $738 NIB for mine last summer. It has the AccuTrigger, very sweet trigger, and the McMillian fiberglass stock. I have not noticed any more significant copper fouling than any other rifles I have shot and cleaned. I do run copper solvent thru mine after each range session.

If he wants a very accurate well built bolt gun and doesn't want to further customize it in the future get the Savage. If he wants to add some custom parts or spend big $$ later to squeeze that final .0025" of accuracy out of it then he should get a Remington 700. There is a lot of aftermarket stuff out there for Remmy's, not much for Savages.
