I just got back from spending a most enjoyable afternoon with my son shooting this new rifle. As I previously posted I had installed a Rifle Basix sear and adjusted it to around 1 lb. We started out with two bulk boxes, one of Remington Thunderbolts and one of Federal hollowpoints. The intention was to sight in the scope and spend some time breaking in the barrel by shooting plastic bottles ect. for sport.
Scope sight in was uneventful and quick. I noticed very quickly the rifle hated the Remington Thunderbolt ammo. It shot the Remington ammo into small ovals of around one inch at 50 yards. However, occasional flyers spread the groups out to 1.5 inch at 50 yards. The bulk packed Federal was not much better but flyers were much less common and average groups with it were under one inch at 50 yards.
We settled down to shooting empty 12 gauge shells off of the 50 yard target stands. After about an hour of that my son told me that he seemed to be hitting the empty shells with every shot. I quickly checked on a fresh target and sure enough the Federal ammo was cutting one ragged hole at 50 yards. I guess the barrel had smoothed out a little during the session. I retried the Remington ammo and found it was doing better as well but it still was throwing annoying flyers.
We spent the rest of the afternoon busting shotgun clays we picked up at the trap range. Set up in the grass from 25 to 100 yards none were safe. With a little care first time hits were the rule with either ammo.
On the way home I bought a selection of ammo CCI Mini-Mags, CCI green label, and some different Federal non-hollow points. Next time out maybe we will find a winner.
End result, a afternoon of fine shooting for less than $10.00 ammo and a fine Savage rifle that is significantly better than minute of tree rat or chipmunk head.
