I recently purchased a used model 11 Savage in 22-250 at a gun show. I ordered three boxes of the "Value Pack" 40-round 45 gr. Winchester ammo from Cabelas. As soon as the ammo arrived I took the model 11 out for a test-drive. After the first round was fired the bolt was very hard to lift and extraction was difficult. The spent casing showed shiney marks on the case head but no mushrooming of the primer was evident. I fired about ten rounds total and that was the only round that had what I would call extreme extraction problems. As a matter, of fact I would say all the other cases extracted normally. However, about half did seem a little tight when I rechambered them. The one--the first one that had severe extraction difficulites--was impossible to rechamber. AND--there was one of the rounds that would not chamber. I am talking about an unfired round--it would not chamber at all. Do you--anyone--think it could be the rifle--excessive headspace or something? The ammo?--this was the first time I have shot any of the "Value Pack" Winchester rounds. Anyone have any similar experience with either this particular rifle or ammo? Any replies will surely be appreciated. I guess I should try another brand of ammo but I am wondering if I should have it checked out be a gunsmith before I do else. (The round that would not chamber appeared to be no longer than the others.)

I've used 22-250 Winchester Value Pack before it worked good for me. I would try a different brand of ammo just in case you got a bad run. If the problem is still there your rifle may have issues.

I am trying to help a friend with a Savage M110 in 7mm Mag with similar problems.

Try seeing if the way the cartridge goes into the chamber matters, ie index the cartridge by headstamp, like the 7mm at 12 oclock.

My friends rifle shoots factroy ammo just fine but after reloading the round needs to go in the chamber the same way it was fired the first time, if the 7mm was at 12 oclock it chambers just fine, with the 7mm at 6 oclock it it VERY hard to chamber the last 1/8th of a inch and even harder to pull the bolt back.

The extractor is a POS IMHO but it seems to be a chamber problem with my friends rifle.
