Well, I've got the bug for a .308 tacticool rifle. I'm pretty set on the Precision Carbine, but I've got a couple questions about it's capabilities. It's a 1:10 twist, heavy, 20" barrel. How much energy/velocity should I expect to lose compared to a 24" barrel, and at what ranges will that loss in energy start to matter for hunting, and that loss of velocity for long range precision shooting?

Thanks!

Just to give you an idea, I have a Remington 700 ADl Varmint in which I am getting the barrel cut from 26" to 20". I am figuring I will lose around 120fps.

Won't make a bit of difference at ethical hunting ranges.

Plenty of guys are shooting out to 1k yds with a 20" .308.

Figure on about 15-25 fps for each inch as long as you stay above 20".

Very little velocity loss or accuracy however you do notice the muzzle blast
if shooting under a metal roof at the range..;)

Alright, thanks guys! I searched it, but didn't find much in the way of hunting.

wingman - Yeah, I've been around people shooing shorter .308's and such, and it's like a hot breeze with every shot lol.

I have cut down a few 26" 308's to 20" and have lost an average of 70fps doing so. A suppressor will take the noise and blast away from a 20 inch tube.

I had that gun.

I sold it to my policeman friend down the street because he really wanted it and I only shot it when it was new, but .308 is expensive as a plinker and I don't hunt game that requires a .308.

Shot well, shot very accurate for me although I only took it out to 350 yards on the range I have.

I think Savage makes a very accurate rifle overall.
