A friend is in the market for a reasonably priced 308 bolt action,
he wants to know if it is better than an axis, ruger American or REM 783??.
he says the model 10 has the trigger within a trigger feature like the others ??"accu trigger". He found a Model 10 combo with a Bushnell scope for $429 at walmart.

but I have never shot or owned a Savage Rifle.???

what do you Savage owners say about this question?

Long term the Savage 10 is the better rifle. All of the others are budget rifles where corners have been cut to reach the lowest price point possible. Not that they don't shoot well, they just aren't meant for long term hard use.

Of the other 3 I like the Ruger the best. In fact I'd probably buy the Ruger over the Savage, but that is just personal preference. While the Savage is probably the better rifle, there are some design features I don't care for.

love my Savages. i haven't seen how you can beat the out-of-the-box accuracy of an Accutrigger Savage without spending double the money.

T/C Venture weathershield dont discount it.MOA guaranteed(and they fill their promise) ,adj trigger,target crown muzzle.My 2 (7mm-08 and .223) 3.2lb trigger pull(says 3.5 - 5lb they both went to 3.2).Great shooters.Considering a 300 Win. mag in the Venture next.....Don

If it's the Savage with the Accutrigger, I'd make that my first choice. I hear very good things about the Ruger, at it's price point, and would pick it over Savage's entry level Axis, simply for it's better trigger. Remington's are such a crap shoot now, I wouldn't touch one of their entry level rifles.

But then, I like Weatherby Vanguard S2s.

Take a look at Marlin x7 and Weatherby Vanguard / Howa 1500 (virtually the same rifle).

I own three of the rifles mentioned in the previous posts (Savage 10, Marlin X7HB, and Howa 1500 Varminter). All three are excellent shooters that will not break the bank. The Marlin x7HB and the Howa 1500 now sport Boyds Ross thumbhole stocks and the actions have been bedded. I felt that the factory stocks on both (especially the Marlin) were sub par and negatively effected accuracy because of flexing. Adding the Boyds stock and bedding the action myself added ~$150 to the cost of each rifle. The Savage 10 is totally stock except for the addition of an adjustable cheek rest. If the OP wants an out of the box tack driver the Savage 10 will fit the bill. The Marlin and Howa are excellent choices but I found they needed a bit of tweaking in order to get them shoot up to their potential.

I have owend 2 savage rifles I will NEVER own another one! That being said I do own a rem. 783 and I love it! No complaints withe the ruger but I would take the the rem. Over all of them.
