Savage model 10

You may not be able to add an accutrigger, depending on the receiver. Is it older with the flattened rear? If so, you won't be able to get one. You can easily rebarrel it yourself (I changed my 110 from 30-06 to 270 without any trouble) and any model 10 stock will work. Keep in mind, though, that if yours is a detachable magazine model, you will have to have a stock that is made for that.

ill mainly be hunting southeastern deer. and wild hog. i think 7mm mag may be overkill for deer and hog. but i would like to have the the choice to use it for elk.

the only thing that has me worried about the 7mm mag is wasted meat

No, you cannot convert to 7mm Mag. The receiver is too short. The good news, however, is that you don't need a new bolt-face for the 243. All you will need is a new barrel.

it currently is chambered in .243.
it looks like the biggest i can go is 308 which i should still be able to hunt elk in Colorado with

Simply? 7mm-08, 308, for sure. In addition, 22-250 and 223 can be done with a bolt-head and magazine change (in addition, of course, to the barrel).

The .308 will do a fine job on elk as long as you don't try and take stupid shots. I've been hunting with an Enfield and have killed a few Elk and a bunch of hogs and deer with the .303. I think the .308 has a little more punch to it and a way better selection of bullets then the .303.

what would be a good round for small southeastern deer 120-170 pounds

solved the problem found a savage .308 with acu-trigger, stainless for 300.

And there are a lot of great triggers out there, that are easier than trying to put an accutrigger. Savage only makes 3 bolt heads, the 223, the magnum, and one for everything else.

Buying a new rifle is a good option. If you do want to upgrade though there are some good barrels available from a few dealers on savageshooters.com It is a forum just for savage rifles. You can also get a couple decent aftermarket drop in triggers that are as good or better than the accutrigger. The .243 as already said uses the same case as the .308, it is just necked down to a 6mm bullet instead. As such the bolt face is the same. You will need a .308 headspace gauge. The cool thing is that since the .308 and .243 are the same case you can use the same gauge to swap the .243 barrel back on if you want to go out and shoot some smaller game. If you would rather just go with a new rifle I can understand that.
