I was looking to buy a .308 bolt.... I really don't need anything fancy, just something that can make a hole where I need it to... and has a magazine capacity of less than 5 rounds, making it NYC legal

Alot of recommendations for the Remington 700... or a Savage. But I don't know what savage, I found this:

http://www.cabelas.com/bolt-action-savage-model-11-hunter-xp-rifle-package-1.shtml

for 400.. I feel like I can't go wrong... Anyone have any experience with this firearm? I can't find any reviews online for it...

I'd say that's a good deal. MSRP on their site is $525.

I have a Model 10, love it! Just do a search for Savage Model 11, you should find some stuff.

I own three, and they all are great rifles. You will fall in love with the Accutrigger once you get use to it. A very good way to go. And yes they have 4 round mags.

This is a Model 110 in 270 Winchester.

Pass on any of the Savage packaged deals...the optics are crap. Having good optics is equally important as having a good rifle.

Buy Savage rifle...once you are on board and want to upgrade...replace the factory barrel with a good barrel from Shilen, Pac Nor, McGowen, Benchmark, Brux and you will have one heck of a good shooting rifle.

I understand this is an "entry level" package.... and that there are MUCH better optics out there... but let me ask this newbie question anyway!

but for 400 shipped, already boresighted.... what's so bad about the stock scope? a 3-9X- will it not hit what I aim at, from 200 yds away out the box? I've used a CHEAP long eye relief scopes before, and had no "wanting" for something better.... but then again it wasn't chambered in .308....

Or is it a reliability issue with cheap scopes? After a few hundred/thousand rounds from the recoil will it lose it's zero? What about the cheap scopes, makes them so bad? or something else, that affects visibility, or target acquisition?

I don't believe there is any such thing as "entry level" when it comes to firearms. There are guns and accessories that are less expensive than others but they are just as common among seasoned shooters as with neophytes.

Nope, the "entry level" rifle from Savage is the Savage Axis with scope for around $290.00 or the Stevens 200 by Savage. Both of those are excelent shooting rifles but without some of the features that are found on the Savage Model 11.

As to the scope, I took the one that came on my package Model 110 and put it on my Marlin 336C in 35 Remington and I have had no problems with the scope at all.

Savages are excelent value for the price.

Get the Trophy Hunter rather than the Hunter. The TH comes with the Accutrigger and the scope it comes with is a Nikon with a BDC reticule. I'd guess that it's a Prostaff but it isn't so marked. It is a definite step up compared to the cheap Bushnells on the Hunter and previous year package rifles. It's the perfect scope for a .308 hunting rifle. My new Trophy Hunter is in .270WSM. That it's a long range hunting rifle and I specifically want more magnification and a target turret on the elevation adjustment, the scope would be staying on that rifle long term.

The only thing that's going right away, or at least as soon as it comes in, is the stock. The factory stock is very light and makes for a really light rifle overall but it feels cheap and the forearm is more flexible than I would like considering that the rifle will be primarily shot from a bipod. I have a new stock on order from Stockade but the lead time is projected at 18 weeks right now. Being that my rifle is a lefty and no one else really makes a proper hunting stock for a lefty rifle for less than the cost of a custom McMillan that allows for a detachable box mag and the wait became necessary and will probably be worth it.

that is a great buy go for it.if you dont like the scope toss it and put something different in those rings.

Having owned half a dozen Savages and nearly as many Remingtons I can highly recommend the Savage, shoots better and the QC is VASTLY better then the Remington products. Many years, several rifles, and thousands of rounds I have not had one single issue with my Savages in the woods or on the range.
I have a Savage 11 in 270 WSM as my long ranged gun, great rifle with the exception of the flexo-junk stock.
The only rifles I like more then my Savages are my FN Winchester 70 Featherweight in 308, no it does not shoot any better then the Savages but it looks and feels like a million bucks, and my baby the Tikka T3 Stainless in 6.5x55, that is simply the perfect deer hunting rifle. 6.25lbs, smoothest action in the business, perfect adjustable trigger, Sako barrel (one hole shooter at 100yd) and a high end fiber/matrix synthetic stock....what is not to love?

I thought about the same gun. It DOESN'T have an accutrigger. For an extra $100, I stepped up to the "Trophy Hunter" package. It does have the accutrigger, and also comes with a slightly better Nikon scope.

That's a great deal and as was said I'd a step up from entry level (like the axis) in quality and features such as the accu trigger. As far as I've seen any prices of 290 on the axis were just the gun not scope combo. I paid $329 + tax for my .308 axis and couldn't be happier BUT if the sale / option would have been available to me to upgrade to the 11 for $70 more I would have gladly taken it.

As for the scope. It's clear, functions in all light conditions I have encountered at the range and in the field and holds zero. I can't ask for any more than that out of any scope much less a "combo special". I will be upgrading mine with a one peice base and new centerpoint scope (4-16x40) because I want certain features and upgrades like AO and mil dot reticle.

Good luck in your search.

For the 3rd time, the Hunter Package *does not* have the Accutrigger. You have to step up to the Trophy Hunter to get that. The Hunter is essentially a Stevens with a detachable magazine. The Trophy Hunter is a much better buy.

Yea sorry I missed that before I posted. After doing more research the hunter as you say seems very similar to the Stevens and the axis.

I recently bought that exact rifle package. I got it from a guy who won it in a raffle from Bass Pro and didn't want it, so I paid $330 and got it brand new in the box. I just bought it as the basis for my long range precision build. I am planning on replacing all the factory stuff except the barrel and bolt, so I didn't really care about the cheap scope, flimsy stock, and lack of Accutrigger... but I have taken it to the range in factory trim and I will say that it is a perfectly serviceable deer rifle just like it comes, even though the trigger is pretty heavy. I might even take it out just like it is and kill a deer or two this year before I tear into it. I might go ahead and buy a picatinny scope base though, since the factory mounts are very limiting and don't let me get the scope far enough forward to give me proper eye relief. I'll probably throw a nicer scope on it too, if I take it out to hunt with. Maybe I can find a .22 or something to put that cheap Bushnell on.
