When my bolt is open the counter seems mis-aligned with only part of the number showing. When the bolt is closed the proper number is displayed squarely in the middle of the counter window. I this normal? I am a new Savage 99 owner and I have no previous experience with this series of rifle.

The 99C is the later drop-magazine version - the earlier versions (1899-1980ish) all had brass or aluminum spool magazines. Given this, all of the 99's (except the 'E'conomy 99E model) had a hole milled in the left side of the receiver, and had numbers stamped on the spool. The numbers and window functioned as a round counter - 0 thru 5. Very cool feature, if not entirely needed.

The display should not vary as a function of the bolt position - the spool sits below the bolt and is not contacted by the bolt in any way. Most of my counters *are* a wee bit misaligned, especially on the 0 mark, but that's not something that the bolt position alters in any way.

When you load the mag - do the numbers display appropriately? Do they feed from the magazine spool into the chamber OK?

I kinda wonder if your rifle has been converted in caliber and has the wrong spool in it (causing the numbers to be misaligned) but can't for the life of me see how the bolt could make the number alignment change.....

If you look at the pics of this auction, you'll see the round counter port on the left side of the receiver on the bottom towards the front ring. The spool sits in the rounded belly of the receiver (which is why it's round, by the way) well below the bolt raceway.

This auction shows the spool - the numbers are stamped on the large ring and show thru the receiver port.
